Honestly the Chromas don't stink at all (I hate the smell of regular acrylics). One thing that's important is to use distilled water with them, I use a sta-wet pallette & it stays wet for weeks if not longer, but if you don't use distilled water then it develops a smell (that's probably more from the sponge than the paint itself). The reasoning is explained somewhere in their literature, you don't need distilled for washing your brushes but it's better in the mist bottle. Speaking of which, they have great customer service too - I had broken my mist bottle & regular spray bottles were producing too-large droplets. I mentioned this to the Chroma vendos at an art supply expo & within 3 days she'd sent me a new one, also took the time to personally answer all of my questions I emailed her (after asking a ton at the expo as well). I don't think they're really like oils, but I like that I can go back & rework an area (which I like to do). In some ways that's better than oils since w/oils once they get tacky there's no choice but to wait till it's completely dry & then put the next layer on. There are a lot of things you can add that will slow drying, speed drying, lock layers, unlock layers, etc. but I haven't tried them extensively. Jerry's frequently runs specials on them where you can get a set of basic colors + some mediums for free. They're also compatible with regular acrylics. Re. how far they go for the price, I haven't used any up yet but I suppose that depends on your painting style. They have a very nice, smooth consistency too & blend better than other acrylics I've tried, and I've tried many brands. Frankly I never understood the big fuss about Golden.
