I usually prefer to use Golden Acrylics (Heavy Body) but it's just so damn expensive!! So I thought I'd start a thread on what paint everyone uses.

I'm hoping to discover a cheaper paint that is comparable to Golden Acrylics in consistency. Help!!

Come share ye knowledge!

Another question, has anyone tried Dick Blick's acrylic paints?

I've never used your kind,so i don't know the cost,but i use(when i have the money to get it)Winsor&Newton-Galeria which i get at DB-200ml i think the last 6 to 8 dollars a tube,smaller ones 2oz.is 2.46.
I also use Daler rowney system3,which is about same price range, thats on line.
I don't care for Liquitex Basics,i bought some because they were cheaper, but they were kinda runny.
I've never used the kind you do but i looked in my DB book and they are pricey.
the kind i use is thick enough i can use it with a knife to paint, and i perfer the Winsor newton.
But it may be one of those things, its what you get use to,i was going to try some of the DB brand when i get the money to buy some, anyone know about those?
I hope this helped,i want to see what others say too, this is a good thread.

Amanda, I use Golden, too, almost exclusively now.  I much prefer them to anything else I have.  I haven't tried the Blick brand....and I just placed a Blick order yesterday with more Golden.

somehow I don't think that helped.....

Thank Christi. I don't care too much for Windsor, but I use to use System 3 when I lived in the UK. I was just looking at it on the Pearl Website. They are $2.49 a tube!!

No Donna, you did not help! But I forgive you. Once you use Golden Acrylics it's hard to use anything else. They are such good paints.

Going to have to give this a lot of thought!

Yeah, I may still end up just forking out the cash! But I'm going to let this run for the day and see what everyone else has to say.

I use Liquitex (not the "basics" line).  I like the color choices.  I've used Golden, but I tend to go back to liquitex.  I would use either though.

I don't like golden for my needs - it seems too chalky for me and does not blend on the canvas as well. I have used windsor newton but find that it is somewhat the same as golden as far as chalkiness goes. I like Liquitex best for blendability.

Thanks Kimmy and Heide for chiming in! It's really interesting hearing what people like about their particular paint.

I've always had trouble getting Liquitex to adhere to the canvas well, it's just so thin. I like my paint thicker like oils.

But thinking about your paintings I can see how it would work well for you Heide. Do you put an underpainting on your canvas beforehand?

**Wow, I'm having Déjà vu right now! Weird...**

Amanda, that gives you weird feeling,i have that now and than.

I like this thread too, because i haven't tried a lot of the acrylics, when i switched from oils i just kinda stuck with the same brands,i did use some different Grumbacher oils but have never tried their acrylics.

Has anyone ever tried the DB brand?

The only acrylics I like are Chroma Atelier Interactives, I believe I did a post on them here awhile ago. I like them because they can be opened up & reworked for a couple of days. My biggest problem with acrylics was that they get sticky & gummy too soon (despite whatever retarders & mediums I would use, I've spent a fortune on that stuff), the Chromas are the only thing I've found that I can work with.

I have mostly a mix of Liquitex and Golden. I like Liquitex's pigments. There's a light blue violet that no on else has and I can't seem to be able to mix, and that I can't live without. I like the price also. Amanda, I think they come in 2 weights now. I still have some usable tubes from college over 20 years ago! I have some DB's own brand, mostly black and white, and they're OK.

ETA: I have some student grade paints that a friend gave me, but I only use them for kids' projects, never my paintings.

very interesting vicki, I was just starting to consider switching to oils because of the way I like to paint and I wonder if I would like that type of paint? I am going to read all through that link you provided.

Just a side note:

At Dick Blick Golden comes in 2 oz tubes and the Atelier Interactive are 80ml or 2.70ml. You are actually getting more and many of the tubes are less expensive than the Golden.

Golden also has something similar, though probably not as good at Atelier, called Golden Open Acrylics.

I'm excited about these new possibilities!

I have some Golden open acrylics.. and maybe its just me.. but the way I paint.. they just don't dry fast enough!

I LOVE Golden Heavy body acyrlics.. that is my fave also and I am mad that misterart.com stopped carrying it.. grrrr!!!

if I can't get Golden.. I do love Daler rowney system3 .. in fact I can't tell much difference between the Daler and Golden.. IMO..

I have some liquitex.. and use what I have.. but I much prefer the other two.

Honestly the Chromas don't stink at all (I hate the smell of regular acrylics). One thing that's important is to use distilled water with them, I use a sta-wet pallette & it stays wet for weeks if not longer, but if you don't use distilled water then it develops a smell (that's probably more from the sponge than the paint itself). The reasoning is explained somewhere in their literature, you don't need distilled for washing your brushes but it's better in the mist bottle. Speaking of which, they have great customer service too - I had broken my mist bottle & regular spray bottles were producing too-large droplets. I mentioned this to the Chroma vendos at an art supply expo & within 3 days she'd sent me a new one, also took the time to personally answer all of my questions I emailed her (after asking a ton at the expo as well).

I don't think they're really like oils, but I like that I can go back & rework an area (which I like to do). In some ways that's better than oils since w/oils once they get tacky there's no choice but to wait till it's completely dry & then put the next layer on. There are a lot of things you can add that will slow drying, speed drying, lock layers, unlock layers, etc. but I haven't tried them extensively. Jerry's frequently runs specials on them where you can get a set of basic colors + some mediums for free. They're also compatible with regular acrylics.

Re. how far they go for the price, I haven't used any up yet but I suppose that depends on your painting style. They have a very nice, smooth consistency too & blend better than other acrylics I've tried, and I've tried many brands. Frankly I never understood the big fuss about Golden.
