What are your faves when it comes to fantasy........

what do ya dig?

the fairies, monsters, sci fi, or like dragons, warriors yielding huge swords?

Options are endless.........

Status: offline 		I guess I am way more of a fairy/'mermaid type of gal...anything sort of earth based.  Not cutesy though.  Don't really dig the whole monsters swords thing....dragons and such can be nice, but again, it depends.  Hard to please, I am.

Status: offline 		Too many things to list - I LOVE fantasy!  Faeries, elves, sci-fi, alternate universe, parallel universe, etc.  And lets not forget that knight in shining armor that I am still waiting for - ROFL - NOT.

Status: offline 		When I think of fantasy, I think of things that come from the subconcious. I think it also crosses genre lines. Surrealist, symbolist, mythology, fairy tales, all these things contain icons of our subconcious and can be a visual language easily understood by all to explain the stuff that goes on internally.

Fantasy art has gotten a bad rap, written off as "merely illustrative". What's wrong with that!? Take a look at Frazetta, Heironymus Bosch and Michelangelo. They all illustrated in metaphor to express "the hero's journey" and raw emotion. In considering fantasy, I simply see it as the artist creating his/her universe as he/she sees fit. It may include fairies, dragons and unicorns, but they are usually symbols of deeper meaning.

Oh, another difference.....fantasy artists usually find jobs as illustrators and get paid, another sin of the art world.

Status: online 		Some good points, Shelly.....remember Andrew Wyeth was referred to as merely an illustrator and they were so wrong. 

And, you have a perfect point....Illustrators get jobs and pay!  What a concept!

Status: offline 		I'm hooked on Gargoyles ... I mean the architectural type. Walk through the streets of New York & go up in a few high-rises, you get a great view of them. Hell, even watch Ghostbusters for that matter.

I think firstly i love unicorns...has a place in my heart as this is the very creature that got me hooked on fantasy art, but i really love faeries as i love figurative art.
I love the depiction of 'strong' women and femme fatales but then again i do also love the soft and romantic sweetness of a damsel in distress, not one for barbarians brandishing swords.

I am glad to see some people do appreciate fantasy, and it isn't taken seriously i don't think.

I think with each artists art there is more meaning, not just fantasy creatures.

For me fantasy is getting back in touch with that inner child, that place where anything is possible, that everything is amazing.
I mean take a one year old child...if they were to look out the window and see a majestic horse with wings flying through the sky, they would look at it as though it was not unusual, they don't understand possible and imapossible, that what makes fantasy special, there's a place where there are no boundaries.
If i could i would live there any day of the week!
