When I think of fantasy, I think of things that come from the subconcious. I think it also crosses genre lines. Surrealist, symbolist, mythology, fairy tales, all these things contain icons of our subconcious and can be a visual language easily understood by all to explain the stuff that goes on internally. Fantasy art has gotten a bad rap, written off as "merely illustrative". What's wrong with that!? Take a look at Frazetta, Heironymus Bosch and Michelangelo. They all illustrated in metaphor to express "the hero's journey" and raw emotion. In considering fantasy, I simply see it as the artist creating his/her universe as he/she sees fit. It may include fairies, dragons and unicorns, but they are usually symbols of deeper meaning. Oh, another difference.....fantasy artists usually find jobs as illustrators and get paid, another sin of the art world.
