So for my birthday I bought myself fancy pants oil paints. You know, the ones that are double the price of the one sitting right next to them, the one that don't include the word "hue" after the color. i got 4 tubes in the colors i'm going to use for this painting. This will be my fancy pants painting. So for the glass challenge I found a picture on a cute blog by a gal named Heather (not our heathers, a totally new heather for the conversation.) Here is her blog and the picture I asked her if I could paint: http://veryheatherly.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html Q. So I am going to do a Grisaille layer first... but I'm wondering if maybe I should do a tonal grisaille-type underpainting (I guess Grisaille isn't the right word, grisaille minus the gris) in the opposite color family rather than black and white. The method I'm thinking of was described by Lauren in this thread: http://www.ebsqart.com/forum/m_66268/mpage_1/key_underpainting/tm.htm#66311 (look for the eggplant) What I wonder is what would be the advantage of grisaille over the tonal method or vise versa? Is there a better application for one over the other? I have always done the black and white bit before, and worry that I'll make a muddy mess with an underpainting with a complementary color. Nevertheless, I like to learn new things... What do you think? Tonight I am going to sketch. Will post when I am done. A. Please.
