So for my birthday I bought myself fancy pants oil paints.  You know, the ones that are double the price of the one sitting right next to them, the one that don't include the word "hue" after the color.  i got 4 tubes in the colors i'm going to use for this painting.  This will be my fancy pants painting.

So for the glass challenge I found a picture on a cute blog by a gal named Heather (not our heathers, a totally new heather for the conversation.)  Here is her blog and the picture I asked her if I could paint:

http://veryheatherly.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Q.  So I am going to do a Grisaille layer first... but I'm wondering if maybe I should do a tonal  grisaille-type underpainting (I guess Grisaille isn't the right word, grisaille minus the gris) in the opposite color family rather than black and white.  The method I'm thinking of was described by Lauren in this thread:

http://www.ebsqart.com/forum/m_66268/mpage_1/key_underpainting/tm.htm#66311  (look for the eggplant)

What I wonder is what would be the advantage of grisaille over the tonal method or vise versa?  Is there a better application for one over the other?  I have always done the black and white bit before, and worry that I'll make a muddy mess with an underpainting with a complementary color.  Nevertheless, I like to learn new things...  What do you think?

Tonight I am going to sketch.  Will post when I am done.

A.  Please.

actually, Lisa....I remember doing a painting in one of those still life classes at school and I'm pretty sure I used just an umber underpainting and then glazed with pure blue on the glass vase and it sprang forth fully formed....a few highlights and it was done(the glass part anyway)...I was seriously impressed, I remember that...here is that painting...

wow, you posted as I was posting....that drawing is awesome....and I think that if you did just an umber underpainting to establish darks, lights and mid tones, let it dry then put pure color glazes over top it will rock!

thin crayola marker, haha!  I am not sophisticated!  I seal it with a quick shot of spray varnish.

I sketch with a sketching pencil..  Do you normally sketch your paintings out in color?

Heather, I remember that Jeanne said to use a watercolor marker to sketch because its pure pigment and doesn't have the issues that charcoal or graphite have with the paint not sticking.

the last time I used a water color marker to sketch out it bled into the paint.  I fought it the whole time.  but then i didn't seal it.  crayola might be wrong but it 's worked the best in the short run, so far.  Heather, I usually use a color.  Used to use pencil but hated the smudging, the lines I laid too dark peeking through even dark paints, etc.

Heather, I probably did a light wash of burnt umber first, then come back in when it was dry and did a drawing, then painted with burnt umber again on the pale ground to establish darks and lights....then glazed

This is what I worked on tonight.  You know it is time to put down the brush when you think to yourself, "oh who cares, color in this little blob here..."    I do find this part of the painting tedious...
