Welcome to the ECO - Challenge:

Some say I'm a hippy, but I just try to do my part. When it comes to being earth friendly in this house, we do it out of habit everyday. Its easy, but now lets make it fun!

This challenge is for every artist! Every non - artist! Everyone!

I want everyone for this challenge to chose several items (minimum of 2), found items, garbage, used items.... thing that are no longer useful for their intended making. It could be of recyclable materials, or items that still go unrecycled. Take those items and create a piece of art out of them. Whether you make a painting on canvas with some newspaper and old yarn glued to it, or a junk yard statue is up to you!

There is no theme to the piece of art you are doing. You can do a still life of fruit, a piece of pottery, functional art like purse or table, something wearable like jewelry. It can be of anything you like, and meets your style.

I would love to see this go into the Work In Progress threads so we can watch it happen. Document your dig for those special pieces of trash!

You don't have to create with whatever you have laying around... dumpster dive.... see what your neighbors are throwing away.... look on craigslist under the 'free' section. People give addresses to where there are piles on the curb headed to the dump.

Now lets talk about time frame. Challenges have been down to Simon Sez Stuff only as of late! So We're going to do 2 set date limits. I want everyone to come here and sign up ASAP, then go off and collect your garbage recycling pieces.

Everyone who is going to do the challenge needs to be signed up AND with garbage by October 2nd. That is when you should post your junk here! WE need to see your found objects... so once you've determined what you are working with take photos of ALL you are planning on using and post it in this thread. (You must use ALL items that you share here on that date, you can add more junk... but do not remove anything you have listed here.) The more the merrier.... (*I've extended the time you can post the photo of your trash until Friday! Review revised rules and the summary at the bottom.)

Then the second date is for the completed art piece. This due date is going to be October 30th. The day before Halloween! This is when the completed item is due and should be posted here.

Prizes:
The prizes are pictures/shown on pages 4 and 5 of this thread.

1st place with receive a set of 4 reusable snack/sandwich bags created by me. They retail for $6 each. Also there has been an add on prize of a 1 year subscription to "Somerset Studio" Magazine.

2nd place will receive a jar of my homemade all natural jam or sauce of their choice of what I have available at the end of the challenge.

**P.s. - NON-EBSQ members, this is a public forum this challenge is on, you may sign up with a free patron account to participate in this challenge. You do not need the paid artist account. Here a good chance to meet the many members of EBSQ who do great challenges like this all the time.

***To quickly sum this up, thanks to John!***

1) Challenge: Make a piece of art using at least two pieces of trash*

2) *Trash is defined here as something that has no further value, is not organic and wasn't purchased in its current state.

3) Your piece must contain at least two items that qualify as "trash" but beyond that can have other non trash items.

4) To qualify you must be signed up by midnight friday night, (October 2nd) and have a picture posted of your junk/trash items you are using.

5) Pics of final pieces are due by midnight October 30th.

6) WIP encouraged.

7) Prizes listed above and photoed on pages 4 & 5.

Slight changes Announced!!!
first, we'll be extending sign up until Friday, October 2nd Midnight, now. Photos will still be due then. We'd like to take the extra time to share the prizes with other people and increase sign up since we got a large flux of interest that peaked so late. This should give enough time to get this posted on the blog and such.

Oh, and when I say we, John has agreed to judge this challenge with me as to be fair to everyone. It will be nice to have another set of eyes on your amazing works to come!

Everything else remains the same!

Oh yes, please sign up here.

To qualify to participate you must sign up here, by September 29th. Also, to keep your spot you must post pictures of the materials you collected (just the trash/recycling) that you have decided to use for the challenge part of the challenge!

Again you must sign up here with a minimium 2 pieces of junk/trash/material by September 29th to have your art you enter considered for the prizes offered on October 30th.

Please feel free to enter any questions you have here, and pictures of work in progress here as well. Anything related to the challenge can come back to this thread!

Don't forget... doesn't have to be a recyclable object.... you are going to recycle whatever it or that are anyways!

No problem guys... if this gets rolling good and we have enough sign ups to do this by September 29th, we may extend the due date for the final piece to do done and in. However, this will be done long before the holiday season starts.

I, as well as most of you are, have lists of items to make for the holiday and it takes awhile to get it all done, plus my job! I don't want this project something rushes because I want to work on gifts for others.

So keep the sign ups coming... post this on your personal pages, facebook, blogs.... ect!

I've begun collecting some of the trash we would normally put out to recycle, but I don't have a clear idea what I'm doing yet. I figure it will come to me.

I have begun to collect things for mine as well! I haven't made my final choices yet.

I am trying to get the prizes together in the meantime. I'll have pictures of those shortly.

I'm not telling what it is, but I know what I'm doing for the challenge.

Would it be okay to have my daughter help? Or would that be against the rules? I think she'd have fun helping me with this one.

You can have in house help on your project! Its allowed!

Just remember to post photos and a list of your chosen junk by September 29th here for you to be officially entered!

I'm going to be doing a fabric arrangement for mine.... Going through stained and ripped clothes that won't even make it to goodwill.

Come on everyone next tuesday is the last day to just sign up! We still have a whole month after that to get it done... plus you could already be working on it.

I also promised if everyone agreed we'd extend the finish date if needed!

But I can't move the sign up date... so come here... sign up and go pick some trash!!

P.S. - If you are new to this site, just sign up with a free patron account, you still have access to this thread and project! Everyone who finished a piece is qualified to win. I would like to get double the people I have signed up here already. I know I've been contacted by several of you out there afraid to post here. Please come post... I promise the other EBSQ member won't bite!

Well, as a motivator for everyone else I have photoed my trash finds. These are the pieces I am using in my eco challenge art piece.

I am using some dishes that were mismatched from years past sets. I tried to donate them, but they only took one that had complete matches and these were the left overs. (It was a smaller thift shop, so I don't think they really had a lot of room for much, but they look all the clothes so no sewing art piece after all.) In addition to the dishes, my neighbor ripped out their railings from their porch, though most of it was rotted or broken, I found one good spindle to save from the dump before they took off with it!

Doesn't look like much, does it?! But I have a great little creation in mind!!!

Of course, I am participating but I do NOT qualify for the cool prizes!!!!
