This place is a like a tomb! I'm going to try to shake things up. I'm doing linocuts a lot lately, and I'm interested in trying a lot of other printmaking methods. It's my goal over time to explore these here, show work and work-in-progress, and maybe host a challenge or two!

So, if you're a printmaker, please speak up, introduce, or re-introduce yourself. Most of the few posts in this forum are very old!

Anyway, it's my pleasure to be a topic host here, and as always, if you have any ideas, please let me know!

Muriel has done a some fabulous prints - including one that I am now the proud owner of!  (which I can't find in your portfolio Muriel!)  Check her out and drag her in here.

I bought some wood boards and some blocks from Dick Blick to give it a try again. I'll be sure to post if I get anything presentable. I did a lot in school years and years ago and it's calling me again. I'm glad I saw this post!

This is exactly what happened to me--haven't done linocuts since school, but something about it sucked me in a little while ago, and now I'm ready to work on it. If I get any presentable proofs, I'll post them here, too. I did a kitschy little owl on a note card, which I put on etsy, and lots of ideas to come.

Glad you found this, too!

And I may need someone to get a whip after Muriel if she doesn't surface here soon!

I just checked it out and I LOVE your little owl!

Well, I need to give it a shot again. It is so funny that you posted now since I've been drawn back to it so recently. Kismit!

This: www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8332581 is a linocut.
I did the original on my kitchen table when I first moved to Vegas, but reprinted it on an etching press when I was in college. The added pressure gives it a nice deep embossing.

The main issue with printmaking is equipment. Even a small etching press is very expensive, and lithography is prohibitive in terms of equipment as well as space. If you take a studio course at your local college, they will let you use the equipment. That's the only way I know of doing it.

Donna's print is an aquatint, a variation on etching. I'll look for another one of the same image to post.

Donna's print is blue, but otherwise it's the same image as this red one. I like the image and had fun with it. The reason it's not in my portfolio is that it is not technically that great. The edges of the plates are not wiped well enough, nor is the background (you shouldn't see any color there at all, nor dirt on the edges.)

The difference between etchings and aquatints is that aquatints have tonal areas, created by the addition of rosin to the plate before putting it in the acid bath. The tones are supposed to be even (ahem).
www.answers.com/topic/aquatint

I was amazed by the variety of spellings of rosin to be found online. It's a white powder derived from resin, and is actually called ROSIN.

Muriel, that is beautiful, even if it's not technically "great".

Hopefully everyone will catch print making fever. I just completed a new linocut that I'm pretty happy with--posting it in a few!

I volunteered to topic host this section since it was so dead, and I'm now obsessed with block printing. I can easily see that I will be hungering to try a lot of different methods soon, so maybe I should look into a class in the future... not now though, my "real" classes start in two weeks. :)

Your linocut is lovely Muriel. I love the color and the subject since I'm a fellow high desert dweller.

I have a print making organization a few blocks away that offers classes and studio rentals. I've been meaning to take a class, but it's out of my budget for now. Soon.

Thanks for the link Muriel. I took violin lessons in grade school (the world is lucky I quit) and I remember ROSIN! I love the eyes print too.

Thank you both!
There's a lot to say about printmaking. I'll be back!

I hope this forum peps up. I run a forum that is specifically for printmakers and it is dead there a lot as well. There are a lot of printmakers out there but it seems they have mostly lost thier voice.

very cool forum, ghosteater!  it seems like there are lots of printmakers on Etsy, although they might not purport themselves as such, but they do use printmaking techniques on a lot of their work....a nice little revival going on there....

Hi!! (Waves!) Wow....a thread in prinkmaking! I've been thinking about printmaking a lot recently. As Muriel said, though...the equipment is really prohibitive. I have wondered about trying to find a small used press for intaglio and woodcuts somewhere. Maybe a school or something? (Like I don't have enough on my plate already!) But I did truly adore the printmaking processes and miss it a lot sometimes. I mentor at the High School and they had a little press....wonder if they'd let me use it?

Off to check out that other forum....

P.S. I love love loved the smell of the inks when I did prints!
