Olympus E10

Great camera - was even better back when I bought it and it was about the best I could find! lol!!!
These days there are better cameras for far less.

Pros
easy to use
flexible
auto focus or manual
white balance
flash cards
easy to understand menus
variety of quality settings (I use the best - TIF setting)
very good manual
tons of bells and whistles - more than I will ever use or understand.

Cons
rather large and heavy compared to many newer cameras that have better MP rates.

Well.........

My Nikon D70 rules.....

However, I got this little Fuji F10 (6.3 MP), which Fuji gave me as an exchange, when my E550 kept on doing the wrong things. I thought I'd hate it, 'cause it didn't have the same bells and whistles as the other one (and especially no eyepiece viewer), but I turn to it all the time to capture everything. It is small, easy, and totally reliable. I used to love my Fuji 2800 zoom and captured all my pix of my paintings with it.

If you want to see how well the F10 works you can check out the photos of my two new show entries and click on the magnifying glass thing. I made them only about 600 or 800 pixels. can't remember, but it's one of them.

Canon Rebel XT

pros:

Over 8mp, so I'm not limited about what size prints I can make.
SLR body, so I can use whatever lenses I need for whatever purpose.
Point-and-shoot functions that are easy to understand and not as limited as you might thing, perfect for idiots like me.
delayed AND instant shutter-closing..   Probably normal these days, but wasn't when I bought my last digital five years ago.
Stands up well to heavy use and clumsy handling.
Logical, standard Canon menu setup, with a few additions.
Good manual.
Supports RAW format.

cons:

It's expensive, to me.  Peripherals and lenses cost a lot, and the camera itself wasn't cheap.
I don't know how to use it like it deserves.
....can't think of anything else.

Sony DSC-S60 Cyber Shot Digital Camera

It is a great little camera overall...

Stats:
4.1 megapixels
3.1 optical zoom

Pros:
Easy to use
has point and shoot option or manual settings options
Easy to download to computer
I can upgrade it with aditional lenses.
Great camera if on a budget....
(Also makes interesting home movies)

Cons:
No real true white balance adjustments, I have to catch it on a good day in order to photgraph my artwork because of thea large amount of white area on them. Tends to dull the white to grey, no matter the setting.
Eats regular batteries for BREAKFAST! USE rechargables!!!!!!!!!

Nikon Coolpix E3200

It was inexpensive, and a good starter camera to get my work flow going. Its only 3.0 MP but I get good prints up to 11" x 14". I don't have to baby the damn thing either! Very resiliant to my continuous dropping and throwing of it! LOL

It offers video with a microphone for upto 3 minutes of video (I have a good size memory card in it so I can get a good 15 minutes of video). Mega zoom, so I can get a good shot of the small stuff. Also a timer so you can set it down to take a photo if you feel you make shake the camera. Just set the 10 sec timer, put it down, focus and click shoot. You can also mess with all the lighting settings as well for what you need it for. Its got more settings then I could possibly going into explaining...

Positively the right camera if you can't spend more then $300 (that $300 with get you the rechargable battery pack and extra memory card kit to go with it!)

If you want more pixels you may want spend a little more...

More info on it here!

My Canon T-70 and my Coolpix 990.  More often that not I will be shooting with a Kiron 105mm 1:1 macro lens.  I like to get as close as I can - right inside things.  I've never had a nicer camera and they were both gifts from my dad who is a professional photographer - I'm not but I am always happy with the results of my T-70.  The Coolpix allows me to get some nice close-ups too and that's what I use to shoot most of my art these days unless I need slides.

Ahh, Shawnmarie, you have the grandaddy to my Nikon Coolpix 4500!  I absolutely love my camera for so many reasons, the macro capability being one.  I LOVE the swivel feature for getting angles you just can't get with a regular camera body, and the fact that the body is metal and not plastic.  I did a lot of investigating before buying my Nikon and I'm happy to say that 2 1/2 years later the only thing I'd give it up for is a camera like the D70, or other Nikon SLR.  IMHO, Nikon has the best lenses, I do need to shop arouond for a nice wide angle lense because I also love taking Northern Lights photos, which brings me to another featue I love about my camera is the capability to do 5 minute night time exposures.

The negatives would be it is a fairly complicated camera to figure out, but I'm working on it.  It has features aplenty so it takes awhile to sort them all out.  The biggest negative thing I can say is the viewing screen is hard to see in daylight situations, and it is fairly small.

I'm totally spoiled with this unit!

Those Northern Lights!  Wow!  I'm envious that you get to see them and I don't.  I would love to get up that way and see them just once.  Actually, once on a hot summer night when my best friend and I were out in the country skinny dipping in her pool we saw the lights all the way down here in the Lansing area.  Amazing!

I would love the chance to upgrade but I'm stuck with the old cameras.  I have to say that in a lot of ways I prefer the older models to the newer ones.  I've compared photos taken with my older model Canon and other cameras I've used and the old Canon with the Kiron lens produces some pretty spectacular stuff - especially me being an amateur

I saw you are a pro family, perhaps you could help us ? - of course, nothing is bettter than a good day-light - but very often we have to find another solution.
what would be the correct equipement to photography paintings (normal size) getting the best resolution and the best colors ? thank you if you can help there

Shawnmarie, you might get more chances at seeing Northern Lights than you think!  There is a site aurorachasers.com where you can plug in your locale information and they will email alert you when conditions are right!  This has beena  cloudy winter so not too much in the way of sky entertainment.  Here's a little prewew..

Canon 20D

Right now it's pissing me off because it is in the shop again.  We'll see if it really gets fixed this time.

Great photo capabilities (when it's working).  Have made 24x36 prints regularly.

Canon 20D. Great results so far although I'm considering the full frame 5D.

I also print at 24 x 36 and larger when I take multiple shots and stitch.

Hi, it's my first post. I use a Nikon D300. Upgraded from the D50 in Sept. because of a project I'm involved in (See Kidspics.ifp3.com). The portrait tonality is impressive.[image][/image] Paired with a Nikon 18-200mm lens it does most jobs quite effectively. I get some ghosting at certain focal lengths so I have to do some closer investigating.

Hi Richard! Gorgeous portrait.

I have a puny camera, 5 mpx Sony W5. But it fits in my purse and it works...
