I whittled it from about 500 photos to about 9 I think it is. I have a migraine and just can't even see straight at this point. Could you look at these photo ref shots I have taken for the still life challenge and pick your top 5 in the order that you like them. Don't base it on the photography because I have the objects to look at and if something is blurry doesn't matter - just composition and color and contrast balance.

number 1

number 2

number 3

I like #4, but I think I might like #1 better if the view was pulled back just a bit.

I agree about number one...if pulled back a bit.  I also liked number 7 & 5......and number 2....I sorta like it without the stars...seems more stately or something...

i like no 6... I like the blue glass jar on the left the best in general.. don't know why.. but i do..    If one of the stars was peaking behind  on the other side of the blue glass jar that would make it be my fave

yikes Heide..  I see everyone has diff opinions.. I know how you feel I do this with my still life's too and want to pull my hair out sometimes making that decision.

I love the Stars!!

Here are my top 3:

#3

If I had to pick one without the stars it would be:

#4

I can't wait to see this completed.

I like #4 but I think you are better off with an odd number of items. Maybe add something that isn't round.

Yeah, it's exactly like that. Only completely different.
I've enjoyed just about as much of this as I can stand.

Thanks a lot you guys I think you all just about split those up nicely Well, as I read your answers and think of your own work and personality I am understanding your choices. I was hoping there would be 2 or 3 clear favorites to make it easy for me. I was thinking I might paint a few of these so I might do one without the stars and a couple with.

I know what you mean about it needs just a little something more in the one without stars robin. I dug through boxes and even went out shopping to find more items but most of my little stuff is still packed up

I photographed those on black velvet (so friggen expensive) and with a 1 1/3 yard of velvet to get a foreground and background of the velvet I had about 2 feet of foreground. Believe it or not that scene used up all two feet of the foreground with the little silver ball at the very edge of the table top. I wanted a bigger piece but it cost 38 dollars for that size. I love the velvet though because it gives such a solid background and really doesn't reflect light much - just sucks it up.

looked again ..still like number 6 b/c the brightness of the blue and the brightness in the yellow ball are more split up and not grouped together.. but spread around more..

I just went and looked at my canvas that I have on hand so that will decide which one I start with. I have two 11x14s and the rest are 24x36. I don't want to do a still life that big because I do not like to paint still lifes larger than life and the 11x14 are a bit small for the more busy images I think so I will start today with one without stars and go out and get some canvas to do a few of the ones with stars.

Yup, same here. The star shape offsets all that roundness.
I like #1 because there are not too many stars and they are in the right places. I think so, anyway.
Not sure about the pink ball though, or gold. Any other colors of those?

It is actually a pale purple ball but I was planning on making a deep shade of purple like what is in my moon and star painting - it is the same ball. I am intending on making the big candlestick holder and the yellow ball more of the same color so it will be a palette of rust color, purple, gold, silver and blue or purple, silver, blue and gold or rust color, silver, blue and gold.

I am feeling kind of excited about this because it has been a long time since I have done a still life and my skills and technique has improved and changed a bit. So I am curious how that will translate to this genre

The more I think about that the funnier it is to me Muriel - how many colors of balls do people usually have? I have a fantastic crystal ball Jeanne gave me but it is packed up somewhere so safe I can't find it in my boxes in the storage unit. So I am thinking it is way in the back of the unit which I have no energy to get to at this time.

I prefer #4 if you switched ball to gold near the blue and the silver next to gold candlestick.

Edited to add:  I deliberately didn't read the posts so I wouldn't influenced, but if you change ball to purple that would work too.  Gook luck on this, the subjects are lovely.

I do hope your migraine goes away and doesn't come back!  Feel better.
