POLITICAL Discussion Guidelines - 3/2/2008 3:44:47 PM

Here is the current policy regarding political discussions on the EBSQ Forum.

Let’s use a university campus as an analogy. Students are allowed to express views, opinions and support causes on campus however, they can't just do it where ever they wish. There are areas where such activities are not allowed. Additionally, the university has the right and the power to stop or deny such activities if they are deemed to be too disruptive to the campus or infringe too much on the rights and believes of other students.
If a take back the night event to heighten awareness of domestic violence wants the quad, as long as it doesn't impede the progress of people getting from one place to another, that's cool. If rally is to be held that for a controversial position or group, it will be allowed because of free speech issues but because of it’s possible incendiary nature it sure as heck won't be held on the steps of the student union. Things that are too controversial, could get out of hand or do get out of hand, then they are shut down or simply not allowed.

So, anything political - and I mean anything, goes in current events. That means articles, cartoons, youtube videos, the tongue in cheek, serious, relevant, obscure or anything else. We will check the posts twice a day. If we feel things are getting out of hand we will say something. If we get enough complaints or a single valid one, we will take action. This does not mean that we will shut something down just because someone complains about another's opinion or personality. We will not put an end to something because someone doesn't like someone's opinion. Someone irritating someone else won’t be a call to action either so don’t worry about being unfairly treated because someone doesn’t like what you said.
There will be no posting of material that is nothing but a smear or unfair and biased opinion. There will be no personal attacks of any kind on anyone. This includes saying things like "conservatives are..." or "democrats are..." as when you make sweeping generalizations, you are going to include members of this community.
If things get too heated, appropriate action will be taken.

We are willing to provide a political forum as this is a very important election year and it is important to many people that they can discuss the events and issues that come with such an environment. However - not everyone feels this way. Some desire nothing more than to avoid political discussions and the emotions that they generate - that is why there will be NOTHING political anywhere but current events.

Please note, there are still many, many months before the presidential election and while we do not want to censor speech, if political discussions become too heated too often, if monitoring political discussions becomes too time consuming, we may ask that they end all together. The well being of this community as a whole is more important than any one topic of discussion. If the atmosphere on the board becomes too toxic or administration is neglecting too many other important activities necessary to the running of EBSQ because we are dealing with the political discussions and their fall-out, they will have to end.

I hope that everyone will respect these guidelines and can understand why they are being put in place. If you are wondering just what can really go wrong, ask someone who was here four years ago.

-Melissa

Additiion - Please mark political threads as such. Not all current events are political.

Many people (and I include myself in this list) personally feel the same way. But just as many people would cry foul for being censored. We're in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

Some things need to be censored.

As I've said before, if the articles, editorials, and URLs stop being posted, you won't hear a peep out of me. But you can expect my response when these kinds of tactics are used on this forum.

If you have a problem with something, please point it out to me and say why. Posting on the thread in a manner that is going to provoke is not productive.

And don't anyone think that making a mess is going to get things shut down. You will be asked to stop posting before the whole thing gets tossed.

I want everyone to be considerate so that we can still discuss politics

Maybe the focus should be on the positives more so than the negatives

That is fine with me Heidi. There have been several times when nice things were posted about Hillary, and I didn't say a word. She's not my candidate but I know she is the candidate of many here.

Might I add that some of us are still trying to decide.  Information is good.  Nasty rhetoric and nonsense, not so much.  Thanks.

There's a question of degree as well, and one of respect.
These guidelines look reasonable to me. I would just ask those who don't want to discuss politics to avoid political theads.
I for one am committed to remaining civil.

Here's what the problem has been with that. A) Political posts have not be marked as such.  B) Political posts have been ending up in sections other than current events, including coffee talk, humour, and the vent, all sections which many members have subscriptions that send some of these poorly labeled items straight to their inbox and they're hit with negativity whether they want it or not.

IF people mark their political posts as "political" as part of the subject heading and IF people limit their political posts to Current Events and IF people keep their discussions civil and focusing on an actual dialogue rather than propoganda and smear campaigns (don't we see enough of this crap from the candidates themselves every commercial break by the end of the political year?) THEN we won't have a problem.

Let me add that every time we have to step in and moderate a volatile political discussion (and all of the subsequent PMs and emails that come flying our way as a result) it takes us away from other time-critical tasks. Let me ask you--what's more important to you all as members? Sales on the site? Or being able to talk about politics? Because every time we have to step in, it impacts how soon sales will happen, which in turn affects the heath of this community and our ability to do our jobs so we can eventually hire more help and not have to work on the days that oh, we give birth or get married (both of which happened in the past two years).

is there any reason for this condescension? i'm taking it that way - i know (believe me, i know ) that the typed word is taken differently than the spoken word. i'm glad that my ignorant (it is ignorant because i forgot about the subscription issue) post has inspired you to write this post. i see things clearly
now.

also - why isn't "politcal discussion guidlines" posted in current events?

There was a longer spiel here, but I thought better of it in the morning. You're right, it was inappropriate in an official policy thread. My sincere apologies.

I had no idea that it wasn't posted there as well. I am sure it was an oversight. You'll have to forgive the newlywed. Her brain must still be on cloud 9.

ETA: It was indeed an oversight and has been corrected. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

I am going to take a wild ass guess here.  I bet that Jen meant to type concession, as opposed to condescension  As in, while the hell would anyone make those sort of personal sacrifices for a job that is not life or death (even for a business owner).  Now mind you, I did some pretty insane things back in corporate, and I certainly didn't own any of those places, so I get it.

I could be dead wrong about Jen's intention....if so, please feel free to beat me with trout.  Hell, I will lend you my whip.

I skip political talk as much as possible, I just don't get emotionally involved with it all.  Does no good for me.

I put a pay pal button on 3 paintings just to see if anyone was watching. Well, This couple emailed about 2 different paintings and bought them. I was pleased and happy. I have now put the asking price on all my paintings in my portfolio.I sure hope I can get some more sales. IN the past, I have gotten some commissions from this site.  good luck to you
