OK so here is the Nov. Doll challenge:

1. Find a vinyl toy (doll or otherwise) which is either a reclaimed item ie. thrift store or dollar store.
Something that would otherwise end up in the trash.

2. Turn it into something original, and preferably outlandish. Turning a doll into a prettier doll is great but lets see how far we can take this.

feel free to use ANY vinyl/plastic toys , use more than one combine them in new and interesting ways ! Create Mythical monsters, create you own self portrait, create the toy you always wanted but knew was too weird to ever be manufactured!

The doll/toy does not need to be free standing it can be mounted on a background if necessary.

I will start a thread the week of Nov 16-22 for people to post their creations, and judge them by the end of the month.
The winner will get a cyber certificate & little surprise from me ( but I'm crap at sending stuff out on time, so be wary of delays!)

OK go and have fun

Hi Noelle: I almost hate to ask this because I may not get mine done in time anyway, but could this include altered cloth dolls in this too? Since cloth dolls are cheap and easy to pick up at the GoodWill or dollar stores, etc.? Maybe it will spur me on to get the four vintage cloth dolls that I bought altered. Thanx.

Annie

Annie I was kinda hoping to keep it to plastic/vinyl, becuase that was what the live presentation was about.:D
You are encouraged to reclaim materials from thrift/junk stores !! Thats where a large percentage of materials come from.
The only real cost would be the primer, you could attempt to just use gesso, make sure you really rough up the plastic/vinyl before using it though.
It could work for a static object or one that is being mounted on some kind of a background

I went looking for a vinyl doll at thrift stores in santa rosa and only found collector dolls with porceline faces. I stopped at this one junk store that fancies itself as an antique store and found the two dolls - one was a giant barbie doll with super ratty hair and the other was a generic vinyl faced doll with ratty hair. I asked the guy how much for the small one and he told me 8 dollars. It pissed me off. This doll had seen better days about 8 years ago. I didn't even bother asking about the big stupid barbie.

So I am still searching. I wish it was during yard sale time of year - you can find stuff like that at yard sales very easily.

the dollar store is a great place to find these kind of things cheaply.

I will find something. I just wanted to find something that was an unloved junk toy. It suits my mindset

yeah I know what you mean, I validate myself using the 1$ store becuase I know they break almost the moment they come out of the box and end up in land fill LOL. I figured I'm just removing the middle man. :P
