Recently browsing eBay's art section, I did an ACEO search & was amazed at the popularity of these "trading cards". Sure enough they are the same size as a baseball card. I saw that some of these miniatures were selling for $10! Saw one selling for $31! So I picked up a pack of 10 canvas cards for like a buck & just painted 5 of them black. They took my oils quite well.

Is there a product out there, a photo quality paper pre-cut to the size of an ACEO for sale? Ya know like the pre-cut business card sheets. I would love to be able to print existing original works of art onto something of that size for sales.

I dont know if they make paper like that yet (my guess is no since I think the individual pre-cut packs are fairly recent), but you could also print a lot on one page & cut them out yourself. It's more work of course but not that hard. People do them on all kinds of surfaces too - wood, masonite, canvas, even glass!

Re. prices, some go for MUCH more than even $31!

I'm going to start doing more ACEO's again too.

Prints generally sell for $3.00 to $8.00, originals start at $5.00 and the sky is the limit depending on artist, popularity, and subject. I've been collecting them for a while now, and have seen some originals go for hundreds of dollars!!!

I'd be happy with a few $2 sales a day. If you get a big enough inventory of artwork, you could sell the things forever ... just like prints or giclees of larger works. The attraction is the price though. It makes your stuff accessible to everyone!

I will be making a few over the weekend .... hopefully!

I used to do ACEOs......I printed many of them on one sheet of 17x22 art paper and then cut them out myself. It was fun to do and I did really well for a while, then all of a sudden the market just dried up for me. Maybe I should try them again.

How well do ACEO prints do (compared to originals)? Has anyone researched that?

Yes I was kinda looking at that as I browsed. The originals definitely do better. It makes sense. I mean ... who would pay $30 for a tiny little print ... something that can be had by every Tom, dick & Harry out there. The attraction is that it is Original. And most use that word in their auction description. OOAK would be a good "word" also.

I guess another option would be to make matte prints & alter each one differently. There's a word for that ... I'm just not sure what it is. I've seen professional artists do it. I saw a guy doing it at Art Expo last year right at his booth. He was just highlighting certain areas of the print, in essence, making an original.

Jasmine Beckett-Griffith does that (hand embellishing) with her ACEO's, and she gets a good price for them. She has a bunch up now, most with good prices from the $20's - mid $40's - I took a quick look at her closed auctions & saw some had gone into the $50's, I'm sure there have been others that went even higher. Of course she has an enormous following as well as phenomenal marketing skills so that might not work for everyone, but it's something to aspire to!

David, do you belong to any of the Ebay ACEO groups? I have for years but never really participated (I think I've only listed maybe two ACEO's that weren't for Nibblefest), but I'm planning on participating more (I hope, I confess that place overwhelms me a bit).

I do see random sellers on ebay cutting down paper and selling them in packs, I have no idea about the quality...you can always buy a large sheet of whatever your preferred material and cut it down...remember, measure twice, cut once :)

(I have a paper cutter and a wife with a steady hand to do mine)

last year I did a bunch and did ok with them, sold originals for $1 up to $14.99

I've done well with them too which is another reason I want to get back into doing them. I bought some little aceo sized masonite panels & am eyeing aceo blanks of my favorite paper for colored pencil - I could (and always used to) cut the myself but it's SO much easier this way, plus I'm not very good at measuring stuff. I could measure something 4 times & get 4 different answers.

The only thing that's hard for me though is getting the composition right for this size, in the past I've drawn the artwork & cropped it down to aceo size - it seems that when I start with the exact size (either precut or just an outline drawn on the paper) I suddenly get stuck!

the smaller format has its own unique difficulties and advantages...i go through periods where that is all i work on, then move back to my normal format...i approach them the same way i do my regular paintings,but there definately is less room for error/self correction...

a group of artist i belong to in my area did a 'small works' show in decemeber, and it was a really good seller for all involved...customers had the chance to explore works from various artists priced affordably...it was such a hit the gallery wants to do it again next year.

Thanks! What kind of surface have you been using that warps? I just bought some blank Stonehenge cards (in 4 colors) + sleeves from a nice seller on ebay too. Stonehenge is my favorite paper for colored pencils but cutting out the cards is too much trouble, I'd rather pay for the convenience. I also bought a large lot of aceo sized masonite panels, something that's definitely too much trouble to try doing myself.

I don't recall which kind of 300# WC paper I tried (I think that was the one that wouldn't scan well at all.)

I believe I've also tried the 140# but I'm going to try taping them down this time and I'm definitely going to try the stonehenge too, so it's good to hear that you like them.

I'd like to try masonite for larger paintings, so I'll look for that.

Your paintings are cool, puppy is killer cute!

Hi,

Well I only use colored pencil on the stonehenge so don't take my word for it if you're going to use water media. The masonite panels I got are cut to aceo size too, and there's no chance of acrylics warping them so I'd recommend those! If you want I can post the link, I just got (well they're on their way) a set of 75 unprimed panels (the pre-primed ones are ok but a little too slick for me) for something like $12.95. On top of that the seller was kind enough to toss in a dozen more! I'm not sure why, but am not complaining either!
