This was truly a unique culture. Their geometric patterns area perfect. The cult figures are set in perfect radial symmetry.

and strangely they burnt their own homes every 80 years!

Why did they burn their homes? It appears they burnt their dead as well. No grave sites have ever been found.

great comparison. Well, the consolidated state of Egypt was around 3000 BC but there were early upper and lower civilizations in Egypt before that. The Sumerians go back to 8000 BC.

I was delighted to see the use of the wheel. Did you check out the slideshow? It's great!

No one knows who invented the wheel but it shows up in several cultures at various time periods. some give credit to the Sumerians.

Perhaps they burned as a way to cleanse and prevent the spread of disease. Another reason to perhaps burn the dead. What type of building materials did they use?  Maybe after 80 years, the society as a whole rebuilt instead of repaired.

Very interesting article.  It is amazing how they are pushing back the age of man's first civilizations.  When I was in school they talked about the Sumerians being the first and now here is an organized group of people much earlier.  I am also amazed how old the spiral and circle designs as ornamentation are.

First and formost, I want to thank you for doing Art History as the topic host. You are doing an amazing job!

Secondly, I think I'm learning more here then I did in school... in art history I just remember reading chapters and then doing a 'quiz' with my book open and never discussed a topic. I don't recall any of my learning from Art History 1 or Art History 2.

Also, just imagine the amazing tools and creations that were burned along with their homes and people that we miss getting to see!!!??? I bet it they were truly ahead of many cultures that developed later.
