well, painting gems is pretty much like painting anything else...you look at them for local color, values, shape and form....if the gem is faceted, that makes it easy in that you just paint the different facets in whatever color/value they are, which is determined by the light source. I would get a gem catalog....you can find them online or order one....and practice painting those....they are usually photogaphed very well and it should be easy to break them down into the shapes and values you need to make it come across... one thing that seems important is to put one or more well placed reflections where they will sparkle...and that usually means against a dark value....the darker the value, the brighter the sparkle will seem...
