Some members have requested that we make it more obvious which sections are public and which sections are private (paid members only)

We tried to make a differentiation, and it radically changed how the forums appear.  Does this change work for you or do you want to get rid of the subforums?

I am so lost it isn't funny.  Umm...I thought the parenthesis that said (public) were pretty self explanatory.  Let me simplify this some.  I have been pretty much lost since the added forums last summer and there is just too much for my pea brain to comprehend.  I'm more lost now than ever.

forgive how this comes out, but we're actually trying to make it MORE idiot friendly, lol.

AND YOU ARE NOT AN IDIOT. Things just look a bit...different...than they did and that takes some getting used to.

Think of it like restaurant menu, Steph.

Public Forums is the lunch menu
Help Forums is salads with the list of salads beneath in sub-forums
General Art Discussion is sandwiches with the list sandwiches beneath in sub-forums
Art Specific Topics is deserts with the list of deserts beneath that in sub-forums.

The Public Forums is the dinner menu
Workshops & Art Process is appetizers with the list of appetizers beneath in the sub-forums
Etc...

Get the idea? Did that help at all?

sorry about that--i forgot to uncheck a box when we made this a public section. given that it hadn't been unchecked, i am still confused as to how anyone made it in here at all!

I have two problems with it:
1. my eyes! It's way too small; I have to get even closer to the screen than I normally do to see the little sub-thingies.
2. layout-wise, the rules (=lines) are in the wrong place; they're right in the middle of stuff that goes together. It's confusing. If you're going to use rules, put them at the end of related stuff. Or don't use them at all. A little space would be sufficient, since the headers are large. And move the little document icons back level with the topic headers as they were before instead of centering them over the whole paragraph.

I do like the separation between public and private forums. That's clearer than it was.

me too.

I'm kinda torn - it's cleaner but cluttered at the same time........maybe smooshed is a better word.

is there any way to space it out a tad so its not so smooshed?

Can we make the fonts larger??

Can we put the underline BETWEEN forum groups and not UNDER the title of the Major Forum?

My image edit of what I mean ^ is pretty wonky but I hope you get the idea. Visually now I find that I'm associating the sub-forums with the MAJOR FORUM listed under the sub-forums - because there is no division between them. Yes, I am confusing.

My first reaction was total shock.....my world changed!!!!!!.......but like Lisa after looking at it a bit, I think we should give it a try.  Not as far to scroll down to get to "posts since last visit" or whatever that is, so that is sorta nice!!

Carolyn ...

(Steph, don't pay attention to the format that the forums are listed in, just scroll down and click on Posts since last Visit.....that then puts you in touch with all the talk, and you can see where it came from and all....)

right now, we're using the forum software's defaults for sub-forums. we don't have a lot of control over how you're seeing it, particularly across browser types, but if we do keep it this way, we'll see what we can do with css to improve readability.

fonts can be made bigger. not overnight, mind you. but it can be done, and hopefully soon. ish.

not sure, though, how many of the other forum defaults we can easily overwrite. we didn't make up the formatting. this is how the software automatically handles sub-forums.

I'm sure I can get used to it.  Unless I'm going to start a new topic I don't usually even look through the forums anyway.  I just go the the posts since my last visit so I can catch up on what I missed.

Pros:
  • I don't have to scroll so far down to click on the posts since my last visit.
  • I can definitely see what's public and what's private
  • As soon as I click on one of the forums, the layout is the same as it used to be.

Con:
  • Those blue words are pretty small and sort of run together.

ok, a brief experiment shows that the horizontal lines between the description and the sub-forums are there ONLY when there's a description for that forum. It goes away otherwise. It's going to take quite a bit of digging to see where this is in the source code, and for now at least, the descriptions are kinda important since it gets you re-oriented with where stuff is.

but we definitely appreciate the feedback on this thus far.

thanks for your patience as we experiement with this potential new format!

Sorry - my eyes cannot deal with this, even with trifocals.  I have to strain too much, try and figure out what is where, I cannot tell when there is a new post in a thread as it is no longer highlighted and it is not worth it really, unless I am looking for something specific.  No more browsing for me.

The listing style was clear, now they are all run together on a line like a paragraph.
