Hello

Recently, I have developed an interest in paintings. I am not that good as I am in the learning process. I started with water colors and now I have switched to oil paintings. Well, my first oil painting turned out to be really good. I painted an old lady sitting in a garden. Now I want to do some abstract work. Tell me, is it OK to do abstract painting on my own or do I need to take the help of an expert.

First of all congratulations on your first oil painting! Being a painter myself, I would suggest that you first study the popular abstract works done by legendary artists. What I personally do before starting a new painting is go through the online art galleries. They have good collection and there you can study the paintings for hours. I mean it; this has helped me a lot to understand abstract paintings. Why don’t you give it a try? It would help you in understanding the art form. Better still see if you can afford to buy one. Nothing like seeing it live in front of your eyes and drawing inspiration.

go for it.

Abstraction is harder than it looks, I struggle with it myself. It's worth looking at what kind of abstract painting appeals to you.
As I have had it explained to me you follow the same basic rules of composition, but paint what you feel.

Try it out play, after all it's only paint and canvas, whats the worst thing that can happen?

A good source for looking up various kinds of paintings is artcyclopedia. You might try googling abstract also for lots of resources. A good place to look is a local museum. But as Noelle say, just go for it. Nothing replaces the kind of learning you get by doing.

Yeah, it's exactly like that. Only completely different.
I've enjoyed just about as much of this as I can stand.

Abstracts are indeed more difficult than portraits, I find anyway. For me the design aspect is challenging. Trying to make it expressive and visually interesting while trying to not make it look like an object is quite difficult. But i'm not saying that it is impossible without professional help. Experiment and find your style.

Welcome to the club of the abstract-painters !!!!!!!

I would perhaps recomment you to try first with acryl, because oil-painting is a very slow process, and if you cannot wait between coats you can quickly get a mess, plus you cannot put any color on any other color without altering - not immediately but much later, as oils continue to work from below up to the surface - and therefore it is better not to ovelap too much, at least at the beginning,

while acryl-colors allow overlapping without risk, and acryl goes quick,

so if you try to discover where is your pleasure with painting, if colors, if shapes, if composition, perhaps you will discover it faster ?

I always start with colors.
only colors.
but I have to conduct many paintings in the same time, waiting long long times between sessions for one single painting - oil requires that !

again, welcome ! and good work !!!!!!!!

The important thing I found about abstracts is putting your emotions into it. To invoke feeling into others. From this you can discover your own techinque! It may help to do some research on abstracts and find how they've changed and evolved over the century.
