I am your new topic host for drawing/illustration.
I have been drawing all my life, my BFA is in drawing, and I have a fairly extensive library. So while I am in no way an authority on the topic, I hope I can help if you have questions about technique, materials, artists or just about anything.

Thank you both! If anyone has ideas for challenges and other fun stuff, please let me know. And I will try to come up with some of my own.

Hey Muriel, I didn't realize you had so much experience with drawing. I posted a message under another topic about what kind of pencils people like and then I read your post here so I'll post it here as well. I'm starting to get a desire to draw and I want to get good pencils. I have no interest in color right now; simply black and white. I like to have the best tools possible and so I'm looking for good pencils. I don't need the super expensive, world's best but you know what I mean. I'd like to have something that is considered very, very good and am looking for opinions on the matter. What do you think? I bow to your expertise.

Have a great day!

Mike

I just love doing value studies in charcoal and pencil, keeps me on my toes when I paint the values in color.  I keep getting better as time goes on, I photograph my painting and then turn it into the gray scale so I can see the true values, and correct accordingly.

ETA:  Mike I just use good artist drawing pencils I buy at the local art store - it is Michael's here where I live.  I am satisfied with them, and they are not very expensive.

Good idea, Heather, but they are not always the "true" values. Can you see individual channels in your software? Sometimes it helps to look at just R, G or B, and then turn just one or 2 of those into grayscale. Often, just the red or green will give you a more pleasant set of values.

That's a great idea!!  Sometimes I lose values when I mess with the colors too much.

Muriel I have no idea what you are saying - LOL.  I am not computer graphics savvy.   I have Photoshop, not the really up to date graphics version, however, it does a good job.  When I turn the photo of my painting into the gray scale or "remove color" I do see where values need to deepen.  Might not be as specific as what you suggest but I can fiddle with contrast etc to see quite a bit of how I would want to change the values.  I also "flip" the photo to get a fresh look at proportions etc.

LOL, that's OK, Heather, I just put that out for general use, really...
If your Photoshop says "Remove color" and not "Desaturate", maybe it's Photoshop Elements (which I'm not familiar with)? In any case, do whatever works for you!

Does anybody know if there is any way of "stripping" the color pencil off of bristol paper, at least enough to change to over all color tone. ie take off orange to substitute over at least a reddish purple. Sometimes I change my mind...or the illustration changes it for me, and I am stuck. I do wipe off with alcohol but that seems to work best for blending. Also is there a such thing as an opaque color pencil?

I've done that, completely changed a background from red to purple (or vice versa). Just cover the area with scotch tape, rub it a little & the color will lift off. You may need to do it a couple of times & have to be careful not to mess up the surface, but it works.

You're welcome, Donna & Alma! Alma I don't think it would work though if you've already put alcohol on it, I think that would just make the color absorb into the paper but I could be wrong. Turpentine thins cp's too. A lot of CP artists use electric erasers too, but those are better for removing spot areas such as for highlights, etc. If you applied the cp thickly then the electric eraser is likely to just push it around & maybe even into the paper more - tape is still the first thing you should try.

I don't know of any opaque colored pencils though, I didn't mean to ignore that part of your question.

You know you were right it didn't remove enough color to change it...However it did create a very interesting texture, which in turn broke up my visual plane (actually what I was looking to do by changing the color) so i pretty much taped my whole drawing! It was a happy failure! lol I will try it on my next piece before I blend with alcohol. Thanks so much!!!!! I am doing the DaNCe!

I remember my mother giving me back in the 70's when no one had them. They're all over the place now:

Any office or art supply store should have them.
