These are a few of the recent portraits that I have done. The first is of my bagpipe teacher and her daughter. The second is a girl, now a woman, that I went to middle and high school with, though we never talked to one another. We just recently got in contact with one another.

These are great Tyler - I especially like the second one. You really captured something of her character and mood. These show a real progression in your skills.  One thing I would say is that you could think more about how you use marks to render texture. Lovely work though!!

Those portraits are lovely to see!  I can tell you have experience in the portraiture as your proportions are right on!  Both capture sensitive moments so they hold the viewer's attention.  Do watch how you render your backgrounds with strong strokes that tend to undermine the sensitive moments you seem to respond to in your portraiture.  Many artists tend to not want to pay as much attention to the background after they render their focal point.  But often it results in the rushed look so background ends up having more contrast or movement than focal point which weakens the piece rather than show off the subject.  I speak from experience  I put all my energy on the people and by the time I get all the information I need to capture them, I just want to rush through the rest of the painting.  But truly, though we shouldn't put as much detail on backgrounds, we still need to put as much thought and time into making the whole painting a harmonious whole even if it means we should put off finishing it until the next day lol

Thank you all for your comments and constructive criticism. I maybe could have rendered the background a little more carefully on the first however the stong strokes do seem to undermind the intimate moment rendered. And unfortunately that is the case with the the childs father.

Oh it's a part of the story!  But think of it this way; this may not always be the case (hopefully).  And maybe if you were to illustrate a similar situation in another piece, you could include a figure in the shadows which would add drama.  I look forward to more of your work

Good point. (In general, not just in this particular piece, epecially since it seems to be what you intended).

Very valid points.

Yeah unfortunately her husband (now ex) wants nothing to do with her or their daughter. It's really hard for me to comprehend someone doing something like that.

As for the second piece, "Michelle". I'm supposed to go to her college on sunday as she agreed to model for me. I'm pretty excited about that.
