Shamelessly ripping off Heather 88's idea, I'm asking you here for your favorite drawings by artists known mainly for their line work. Or others too, actually. I just remembered I never cared much for Leroy Neimann's multicolored sports paintings, but have you ever seen his drawings? Wow.

The first artist who came to mind when I decided to start this thread was Kathe Kollwitz, German Expressionist, 1867-1945. Her work is dark, and some might find it depressing, but the despair she felt during both world wars echoes my mood when I think of the unwinnable war we are engaged in at the moment. Human misery, unfortunately, is still with us. Here is a sample of the many self-portraits she did throughout her life. Almost all her work was monochromatic, enhancing the mood and darkness of her subjects. Many of her works were etchings and lithographs, but every print starts with a drawing.

Another master of line was Ingres, who produced many paintings but was considered the best draughtsman of his time.
Contrast this cool, classic portrait (not a self-portrait, he was actually cuter than that... ) with the Kollwitz, so full of angst.

Thanks, Lauren! There are so many amazing drawings... I just love the beauty of a pure line or the scream of an angry mark... can't wait to see what people will post!

Thanks for posting, Lisa!
I didn't know Dr. Seuss did political cartoons... that's a good one.
Could you please post the Da Vinci larger?

I didn't know he did political drawings either. I was amused when I found them.

The da Vinci drawing is going to be small or huge. I'll add a link if I post the bigger one it will mess the prospective of the thread up.  I hope the link works.

Thanks for the link!
Leonardo's inventiveness was amazing, as well as his ability to make you think those machines weree real! The perspective is very subtle but very effective. The brown/sepia ink adds a softer dimension to the drawing as well.

Albrecht Durer has always been one of my favorite artists, especially his etchings and drawings...I think this one is mostly drawing with some washes...

Lauren, I have a book of erotic art with several Beardsley drawings that are really outrageous and funny... Anybody who wants to see can PM me... Others too, even Rembrandt...

Lisa, I adore Schiele! He was certainly messed up, but as artists I think most of us can relate... His work is just amazing.

I am new here and I am a collector not an artist. My favorite drawings from a living artist are by Tony Mascardelli from Calgary. Check out his work and his artist statement.
