In the hope that we can keep the digital section talking I wanted to post my most recent experimentation.  I am trying to teach myself the program Painter X...........not an easy program there are so many variables in it that my head is swimming.  After several awful attempts to produce anything I came up with this.  Not perfect, but interesting.  It is based on a photograph.  I used the Hard Chalk brush over Italien Watercolor paper.  There are thousands of choices of papers and the brushes and their variables go on forever.  I then set to cloning one of my pictures.  I am following the book Painter X for Photographers.  This is one of the beginning projects.....so here it is...(those reading the Image a Day thread will recognize the pic I used)

It is very hard to tell in this small image, but the brush leaves a texture to the strokes.  I haven't printed this one out yet to see what it really looks like.   Will have to do that.

Carolyn I think it looks great!  Reminds me of something I can't put a name to right now. Will try to remember.

So, is the photograph a part of the picture and then you painted on it or did you paint this yourself from scratch? Just wondering a bit more about the process.

Painter X is by Corel. They have a newer version out now....Painter 11, but I could not afford it so got the 10 version. Figured it would be close.

Amanda I will try to describe the technique. You use a photo you have....and not all of them look good this way, then you clone that image to make another image with tracing paper over it. (that is something Painter does when you click quick clone). Then you create the brush. There are tons of brushes in Painter. The book told me to use Chalk, and a variation of it that I don't remember. The brush was set up to clone so that it would apply texture using the colors from the picture. Then you draw following your picture (I know sounds like Paint by numbers, but it was way harder). You have to think about how the direction of the brush is going to look in the final image. Knowing more about painting might make the process easier than it is for me

Well, sorta that is what I did. I am just at the beginning of the book so there is a lot more to learn. I can't believe the number of brushes and all the variations there are to them.....and how each one treats the paper and all that. It is fun, but challenging.

That sounds really interesting and NOT easy!  Would you mind sharing the original photograph? I'd love to see where it started.

Amanda, my computer is down and I am using my hubbies laptop that doesn't have any of my pictures. The original picture was posted to the Image a Day thread. It was last weeks, but you could look it up that way!

That works, thanks!

I think I was tried Painter X, but it was a couple years ago when I was living in the UK. I remember seeing it in a magazine. It's difficult to dive into other programs when you've been so accustomed to another.

Yes, learning a whole new program is frustrating. It does help that a lot of the tools and the layout is like Photoshop, but that is where the similiarity ends. Once my puter is back up and running I will work some more with it and maybe have something else.....maybe! How about you, have you done any more sections of your book?

I haven't yet Carolyn. I've been dragging my feet for the past few days (just a bit under the weather) but I am toying with the idea of trying to create a digital painting on my own, using the techniques from that project I posted.

No firm idea yet, but I will share once I have something concrete.

I look forward to seeing anything you do. (but, sorry you have been under the weather, hope you're better soon)

I am curious do you use a Wacom tablet to draw? Staples just started carrying Wacom tablets and they have the new Intuous 4 and I am curious about it. I wish I could experiment with it to see what it is like and figure out how I would use it (I don't really draw much, but it sure seems like it would be easier to use than a mouse for what I have been doing!)

I used to have a tablet, but it was very small--not sure what happened to it actually. Won't be able to afford another one anytime soon.

I'll just have my mother scan the initial sketch I make and then paint with the mouse. That's all I did with the last project.

Thanks for the well wishes.

I have a small one, too, but I find it really difficult to use. I think that is because it is so small and the pen is not as sensitive as the new ones are now.

So you found painting ok with the mouse? It sure turned out nice!

Yeah, surprisingly it was okay to paint with the mouse. There were a few instances of Edit>Undo  but not too many.

I think I'm going to do a tree frog painting. Off to sketch it now!

Yes, Christi, they are pricey.....that is why I want to know if I would use them or not. And, it is hard to know that until you get one. What a conundrum!!
