Well guys I have been making lots of suncatcher out of stained glass lately.  I have a show coming up on the 4th of July and wanted to make some garden art and use up some of my stained glass.  I ran out of copper patina and my local shop was out.  I did a little digging and found out you can make your own.  So I tried it yesterday and it worked great.  I went to home depot and bought this stuff called Zep Root Kill (in the plumbing section).  It is copper sulfate crystals.  You boil a cup of distilled water and add 6 tsp of the copper sulfate and mix until is dissolve.  Add a 1 tsp of lemon juice.  It makes the same patina you buy from stained glass suppliers and it's cheap to make.  I paid about $6 for the copper sulfate and it will last a long time. Use Mothers California Gold Pure Carnauba Wax ( you can find it at any auto store) to polish to a brite copper.  I also use the wax the piece before I put the patina on.  This is the trick to getting copper patina to work great.

It's so nice of you to share this.
I have a question.

I also use the wax the piece before I put the patina on.  Andrea

Do you mean you wax before and after you add the patina?

Love to know.
Thanks.

Yes I wax before and after.  Copper patina is tricky.  It takes alot of polishing to get it to come out nice and shiny.
