Hey all I'm going to start the thread, I was telling you about behind the scenes (on the sign out sheet)

I started the sketch out last night, but lucky me forgot my camera at the jobby job.

I did leave the webcam on at home in case anyone wanted to peek, BUT I can't get it to come up (ip must have cycled ) so that was pointless

The mission:

A mermaid portrait inspired by this piece I did "The Figi Mermaid"

in 2005.

We are going to mesh this type of earthy tones, with this style/color of background for a very dramatic piece:

This commission is a 20x24x1.5 in Acrylics.

This is going to be a portrait but without a face - so I'm gonna have to convey the client, with small details, instead of an actual face. (i.e body shape, size, hairline, hairstyle, haircolor, jawline ect.....)

And so it begins

(I will be sure to bring my camera home with me tonight and get photos posted of the sketching progress ect.)

Now that's an interesting idea -- a portrait without a face!  *You* could pull this off, Kris :)
Looking forward to see what happens!

Awe you guys are gonna make me blush

Here is the initial progress from yesterday.

We chose this composition because we want to give not only her body a space of it's own but we also don't want to loose focus on the fact she's a mermaid - so we are splitting it basicly down the middle. (and i still get my 1/3 blank canvas )

This will allow for her flowing hair and tail  I'm thinking her tail will be a little bit more ornate than the Figi's.

It also has my comp style in that she leaves the canvas - I don't like my work to be defined by the canvas.

She will be a bit more modest as I go but I need to placement of the full breasts in now as she will be partially covered - this will allow for proper drape-ing of the *scarf* later.

The composition looks awesome so far!!  I have similar feelings about having a figure bound by a canvas....

Since I have many projects going at once I'm working on this a little at a time. I plan to have the sketch out for approval by Wed of this week. I've got a 1 -3 week timeline, but I prefer 2 .

Here is Day 2 Progress (I'm on day 4), starting laying in some of her hair, and working on the mermaid aspect of it.

There has been more progress - I'm just behind on my photo taking - I will post another photo tonight.

She starting to really take shape. Her tail will also have a flip over, that's not shown yet. The hair and the side of her face are just starting to take shape.

Can't wait for you to see the other photo I have. but that will be later on tonight. The hair is ROCKIN'

I'm really liking how the composition will make your eye go directly to her "white" body (because of the contrast of the colors when they are into play), then you will drawn around by the tail and end on her glorious hair - then go around again - like a giant oval.

Here are photos as promised but not the good ones - my camera is on the fritz (AGAIN! I need to buy a new one flat out - any one got a great one they selling CHEAP/FREE? Pm me.) and ate the progress pics! LUCKILY i had taken photos on my camera phone of all things too, so those will have to do.

On this one I starting really laying in the hair - the client has beautiful hair. I'm going with a windblown look - as if she's enjoying a few seconds out of water and it is the best sensation ever. To feel the wind on your skin/scales, just like your first trip to the beach.

I have not added shading hatches yet so things will start to look a little wonky and everything will seem kinda flat. But saving the shadows till last will ensure the light sources are all the same instead of jumpin around.

Because we all know wonky light sources can make a great piece of art - ok - instead of FABOO!

Day 3

And here is Day 4:

I Added in m ore hair and worked on the tail a bit.

I'm going to have a small portion of the tail come out from behind her on the right for interest and to show depth.

The hair might look like a mess right now, BUT once it gets painted in it will make sense because some will be lighter than others to show depth as well. (depth: that's where my stuff always looks wonky before it's shaded/painted)

I'm not really loving the waist at this second it seems like to hard of a transition between skin and scale. I think I will do a more scaley type of transition to soften it up. Though i paint in the hard line I don't want blunt force trama to ones eyes as they view the flow. (the oval)

Also I have some more of the tail that may or may not come into play. I need to work on the *scarf* part first to see if it needs the lower detailed section of the tail that is lighter than the rest in the sketch.
