Next year is our 10th anniversary and we want to hear your show ideas for making next year's exhibits schedule ROCK!

Here's the shows that we already know will be on the schedule:

10th Annual Ripped Off
10th Annual Portrait Swap
9th Annual Pet Portrait Swap
"Shut Out: What you've missed since the gallery world shut its doors" <--ironically going to be our first brick & mortar exhibit
Dia de los Muertos
Spam & Trout Biennial
Urban Plein Air

That's 7 of our 48 potential shows. What else should we include?

On the fence is whether or not we continue with FOTM and 1WC. Thoughts?

Not sure if it's been done already? You can peruse what we've done in the past nine years here:

http://www.ebsqart.com/Shows.asp

So bring us your ideas--you could see your concept end up on next year's schedule!

Hi,I'll give this some more thought,i only scaned down the list of past shows, but has there ever been,"All things tropical"off the top of my head.

I really like FOTM,some beautiful work comes out of that,if your running out of flowers, you could always use combinations,or seasonal arrangements.

Personly i don't really care for 1WC,but even that depends on the word,i don't know if this makes sense but some words have so many interpretations, they lose connection and theme, maybe thats it,i just prefer more of a theme.
Anyway, maybe this will get the ball rolling,so to speak. christi

Not sure if it's been done ( I know I could check but my head is killing me  ) but what about Skies? Another might be Space.

one word connection often seems to be a place for people to put art from their portfolio that never fit in a show theme - sometimes it is really stretching it where as the people who participate in the flower of the month shows usually paint for that show. I would like to see some repeats on some of the beloved flowers. I know you said you will never repeat flowers but there are so many people who would participate if there was a repeat of some like roses, lillies, daisies and sunflowers for example. It is more difficult to paint some of the flowers that are really small like when we did the lobelia or multi-floret because they are not as easy to sell because most of the public has no idea what they are looking at as far as what kind of flower it is and they have no emotional attachment to it. So many of the people here were not here when those flowers first ran - perhaps to narrow things down you can have it be red rose this year, yellow rose next year, coral rose the next year, white rose the next year and so on.

My theme I turned in for a proposal for a solo show is called "secret life of flowers" it is all magnified versions of looking into the center of the flower. Whether I get chosen to do that show or not for the center for the arts in our area I still intend on developing that theme to use for other submissions of shows. I got hooked on flowers because of ebsq fotm shows. Besides still life paintings I will primarily only be painting flowers for the next 12 months.

It also helps if the the season corresponds with after the flower has started to bloom. I looked all over for open fennel flowers to photograph for reference before the fennel flower show but nothing was open anywhere in our wild areas out here. I prefer to work from my own photo refs. So if it is something that doesn't open until may I would like the show to be in june - whenever possible.

I also would like to see at least one still life specific show each year (one that you do not have to put flowers in)

with that being said and for in case you change your mind about repeats I will list some of the ones I would like repeated as well - please don't find that pushy it is for just in case

musical instruments
gargoyles and such
the big 5 (five biggest cities in the united states) either up close of buildings or landmarks or city scapes
cottages
still life with sphere in it
still life with old technology in it
still life with toy in it
apples
pears
grapes
fruit blossoms
red roses
pink roses
white roses
purple roses
daisies (not gerbra)
sunflowers
poppies
lavender
morning glory
strawberries
garlic
artichoke
lotus
bees
butterflies

I would love to do those Hiede listed, with being a newer member,i was not here to be in any of those shows.and i would love the chance to be able to try some of my favorite flowers, lilies for one,and not on the list are pansies, which i'm pretty sure has been done.I would love to do cottages.
And things like Butterflies, maybe if the themes where of things that are easier to sell afterwards, more people may get involved in the shows.
and i agree with Hiede too on the 1WC shows.like this month for instance,a person just sitting, its an older painting and they've put a spin on the words to fit wanderlust.
I really don't think people would complain about repeting some of the classics, and it would give newer members a chance.

Hmm... I like this. How about something just generally on illustration where the artist takes a sentence or a paragraph or something and illustrates it? It could be a page from a children's book or any other book or magazine or anything, I suppose.

With the one word concepts, why don't we expand out to include phrases, etc? That could be fun. Phrases like "When you least expect it" or "Just when you thought it was safe..." or "After it was all over" or "behind the door" or something like that. (I see cat pictures in many of these... LOL)

Hmm.... thinking about what Christi said... would it be manageable to have a show called "Deja Vu" or something where artists choose a past EBSQ show them and submit an entry for it? That would be cool. I would vote for nothing from the past year or so. Just the old stuff, excluding the Ripped stuff and the portraits, right?

I forgot to mention that we're also going to be doing a show called "redux" where members can rip off one of their own previous paintings. It can either be a complete do-over or it can be a variation on the theme you explored in your original.

I like FOTM, and I agree with other posters that IWC would be better if the words had more of a theme to them, and weren't so broad.  How about "Home Sweet Home" as a show?

I personally love the one word concept shows. Sometimes some of the entries are a strech but sometimes they are an amazing piece of art. The shows usually have lots of entries, and that always looks good on the front page! It's a nice break from the traditional...and isn't that what art is about?
Like Heide, I would love to see some of the favorite flowers revisited for the FOTM shows.

I feel the same way - like both, and would like to have flowers revisited. Some haven't been done in the 4 years I have been here, I think. This hasn't been a good year for me productivity wise - no space, etc, but I hope to be producing more and look forward to the shows.

Excellent points made by Heide and John B.

As far as FOTM is concerned, you could expand into the greater plant world, which could include flowers, or not. I think you limited yourselves needlessly by having a "Fruit" show for example. How about having "Cherry", Apple", "Pomegranate" and so on. All those have blossoms of course, for the flower lovers. Also, your choices are fairly Eastern-centric. You had not "Flowering trees", but "Dogwood" which is impossible to find in the Southwest. On the other hand, you had a "Cactus" show in which people entered succulents and stayed in, and "Succulents" in which people entered cacti and stayed in. How about a "Prickly Pear" (12 different species) or "Cholla" (20 different species) or "Yucca" (50 different species) show? And of course, trees. A TOTM show would keep us busy for many months. Vegetables, too.
The short answer is that there are lots more candidates for shows in the plant world and almost all include flowers!

I like the One-Word Concept shows. I know I haven't entered any yet, but I am hoping to fix that.
I also like historical and literary themes.

I love the Flower of the Month because there are an almost endless amout of flowers so it's always something new. Maybe you could also add "Plants" to this so people could do trees, vegetable plants like corn and tomatoes, or what someone else here said, have different takes on flowers like "macro", watercolor only, oil or acrylic only, "seen from a distance", "upside down", copy of Old Master's flowers, designed flowers, there is probably an endless amount of different ways to look at a flower and I know everyone here could probably add more ways.

*Children's Book Illustration*
Sleeping Dogs
*Sleeping Cats*
Art from the Back Yard
Graphic Novel Art or Illustration
Manga (Japanese graphic comic book novels)
Veggies
Trees
Micro art (done really really small)
*Illustration for a faux magazine article*
Art that adds type or fonts to the image
Vintage Halloween
Vintage Vampires
Vintage Ghosts
Victorian anything
Steam punk (again, I loved that show. I never knew what it was until EBSQ had a show and now I love it)
The Night Sky

(did I spell faux right?)

Sculpted flowers

Thanks, Muriel ;)

Hi Christi: If you look on Ebay, there are artists who do Halloween art based on vintage Halloween images from about the 1950's on back to Victorian era. A Google search would probably bring up a lot of vintage Halloween art or vintage Victorian Halloween post cards. There many old Halloween book illustrations too. There is definitely a different style to the vintage Halloween art and the vintage Victorian Halloween art than there is with Halloween art today. I'm not meaning that they should be copied verbatim, but "based" on vintage art, or painted with a vintagey look either on the borders or on the image. I've also seen some collage artists make very cool shadow boxes and collages based on the old images. There's one artist on Ebay who does amazing papier mache work based on old Halloween images. I did a Halloween painting based on many images of vintage Halloween pumpkins that I've seen and it should be in my portfolio. I'll go check and make sure it's still in there. Does this help?

Hi Christi: It's on page 3 of my portfolio "Magnificent Magical Pumpkin Lady." Also I did the 3 "Fairy Home" paintings to give them a deliberate vintage look, on 1st page I think.
