CONCRETE ART - 1/15/2008 10:14:53 PM

I am becoming more & more obsessed with creating artwork that really is kinda against the grain. I remember visiting the NY Art Expo a few years ago & being drawn to all the 3D art. Uses of wax, stone, metal, wood, glass, etc. intrigued me, even when they were incorporated into paintings.
Now call me crazy but I am drawing up plans to create 3D wall art  containing CONCRETE. I now have the space, the knowledge & most of all, the time, to begin making something that I haven't seen before. I've looked up & googled & researched concrete art & it is always sculpture. Sculpture than sits on a strong ground base. Obviously, due to the weight & bulk of concrete that is where it should be. There are safety issues as well when elevating something with it's heaviness. I have purchased DVD's & books on concrete. I subscribe to a concrete newsletter that keeps you abreast of all the latest technology. I really think I CAN DO THIS!!

The pieces that I will be creating are not going to be a giant solid piece of concrete hanging on the wall, but rather pieces that INCLUDE concrete. I really love the minimalist appeal. It is a very subdued yet exciting (to me) look. It will take a while for me to experiment with the material, but I think if I can accomplish what my warped mind envisions, I have the opportunity to do something special.

Any comments are welcomed here. Please, I need feedbak!!

Now that sounds interesting and the minimalist approach sounds nice.  I like the texture and feel of concrete, should be fun!!

Can't wait to see pics...you are planning to do pics?  And, a WIP or two??

David, that sounds exciting....I've seen concrete used as countertops in kitchens(gorgeous)and in JEWELRY(fantastic)....I love the texture of it and the fact that it can also take on any texture you impart to it....you can color it, add other elements....

what's not to love...can't wait to see what you do with it!

Lauren ... you have me figured out. I have been contemplating specializing in concrete countertops in my home repair business. I designed kitchens at Home Depot for two years & when I came across some info on concrete tops, I was floored. That got me thinking .... if I could get that look & incorporate it into my art .... hmmm. Coloring it, embedding objects into it, using acid washes & cool stuff like that create very unique looks.

Sorry guys ... I'm still in the process of getting settled down in this new space, on top of promoting my home improvement venture & getting my house sold. I did happen to start a new oil painting today .... my first of the year! I have picked up some of the supplies to construct the form for the concrete. I also brought a couple of saw horses & mounting board over to support a small test pour. What's great about this "experiment" is that the money to do one is very minimal. A bag of concrete, some rebar or mesh, some melamine for form & some screws .... that's it! I'll try to push this thing along ....thanx for the nudge.

Concrete on the back burner ... just got a new, more realistic project in mind. See front door post.
