Big gaudy beaded cuff bracelet - 4/4/2009 4:24:43 PM

Here's a big gaudy cuff bracelet that I'm working on from a class I took at a bead shop. I love it's free-form style, it looks like something found in a treasure chest in a pirate movie, right up my gaudy alley. And I'm finally using my grandma's vintage buttons and charms, they are out of their box in the closet and onto my wrist where I can see and enjoy them. I'm also adding a few new buttons.

These pics were two days ago and now I've started on the other side and working my way toward the middle. I've taken some close-ups so you can see how I'm doing this. I am really happy with the way this is turning out.

First we made a free-form wire armature and pounded it with a hammer to harden the wire. Then we started free-form stringing on thinner wire all the different beads you see in the tray below and adding buttons and charms. After it's finished, we bend it into a cuff shape. I'll post a pic when it's done.

It takes nowhere near the amount of buttons in the bags, they are for other future projects, not this one. It will take about what you see laid out, probably even less.

I'll post the finished bracelet here when I'm done. I'm finding that beading can be habit forming ;)

Annie

Glad you guys like. I almost didn't post it because I thought it was pretty gaudy. But I like gaudy. More is more!

Forgot to show the back where you can see how I'm wrapping this. And anchoring it every few strands by wrapping 4 or 5 times around the armature. By anchoring it the bead lady said that if we see a spot we don't like after it's finished, we can just snip it out without the whole bracelet falling apart. You can see some anchoring to the left of my thumb.

Annie, I'm wondering - will there be an issue with irritation where some of the bits that stick out touch the skin?

Nope, it's actually quite smooth when you get it on. The metal sticky out bits are end wires that will be trimmed off and rounded under after it is all done. I'm leaving them stick out so I'll know where they are. I know it looks sort of prickly but it's not. Forgot to add tht after it's done we go around the edge wrapping beaded wire to fill in the edges and make them smoother.

I'm going to be sad when this project ends. I'm enjoying every minute of working on this.

Steph, are you going to try one? I know it would be gorgeous if you do! The next time I'm in her store I'm going to ask her if I could photograph the two that are there, then I'll post them here. One is a royal blue and the other a sunflower yellow. They are yumm-o.

I hope you do, I'd like to see your unique take on it!
I'm not much help but I figured the people here who really knew beading could probably figure it out from the photos. If anyone tries it and they need help, I'd try to help the best I could, but I'm a beginner beginner and don't even know what half the stuff is called.  but I could lead someone through it if they didn't mind every other word being "thingy".
