Stephanie M. D’Aigle - “Energy In The Air”
Photography

This photograph was taken at the Bayfront Blues Festival in Duluth Minnesota.  Bayfront Blues is a 4 day festival of nonstop blues from morning till night and while the music is winding down, some of the participants seem to be winding up still.   The man in the photograph is someone I have seen dancing at the festival every year, from the beginning to the end of each day.  Even though the crowd can be as large as 25,000 people, you can usually spot him in his tye dye outfit, wildly dancing among the crowd.  For years, he would carry his own dance floor square with him but I don't know what happened with that.

The Sunday night in question, I found myself sitting just chairs away from the wild dancing man.  He had quite the group of friends dancing with him who had as much energy as he, so I couldn't help but grab my camera and try to capture the moment.  For most of the rest of us, after 4 days and nights, our energy was waning.  These people had energy to spare, you can see it in the air!

Carolyn Schiffouer – “Ode To Pachelbel’s Canon”
Digital 8”x10”

This is for the "music in me" abstract art challenge.  I have always been inspired by the music of Pachelbel's Canon.  For a while I played a hammered dulcimer and accompanied a violinist in playing the canon.

This canon was played as a parlor game.  One muscian would start a ground (simple melody that remained consistant throughout the piece) and the other muscians would go around the room taking turns playing something that would go with the ground.  This is how Pachelbel's Canon came into being.  After a while it took the form we see today.

In my piece the ground is represented by the white lined area that repeats itsel over and over.  The swirling gold, blue and purple represent the music swirling around the Ground.  I have always thought of Pachelbe's Canon as a piece that swirled with light and dark passages of different colors.  That is what I tried to depict with this piece, that interplay between the melodies and the ground.

Lesley Chandler – “Jenny”
Mixed Media 16” x 20”

This mixed media piece was inspired by my love for the eighties music I listened to "back in the day". This was one of my favorite songs by Tommy Tutone-867-5309. It was one of those tunes that got stuck in the head. I still hear it often on the eighties station on the satelite radio. I used acrylics, markers, pens, charcoal pencils. I also used stamps, stencils and just plain old writing. I wanted this piece to look as much like a public bathroom wall as possible!

Christina Fajardo – “Red Guitar”
Acrylic on Canvas 28” x 32”
I painted this for a couple who just bought a new house. The husband is a musician and his wife wanted to surprise him with a painting that reflected who he is on the living room wall. I live and breathe music and art so the topic comes easy to me ..... love, love, love it!

Angela Gue – “The Music In Me Busts Loose”
Acrylic on MDF 12 ½” x 11 ¼”

This art work was created for The Music In Me Abstract art contest. Like most of my art, this creation has multiple meanings for me. First it is based on the B52's Cosmic thing album which I love to dance and sing to. The colors in my painting have been derived from the colors used on the album/CD, and the dancing girl is letting go of all of her inhibitions. She is in the middle, like a CD-thus she is metallic silver and has the same type of symbols that can be found on the B52's CD. This painting also represents fun, freedom and gay pride as the woman dances in empowerment. Therefore "The Music in Me Busts Loose" is a journey in expression and the love of music created on recycled MDF and painted with acrylic paints.

Muriel Areno – “Music 4 My Soul”
Acrylic on Canvas 12” x 36”

I am a fan of so many different kinds of music that I had to explore several of them along the course of this painting. I chose the extreme horizontal format to illustrate the progression and rhythm of music, from bright to soft and back again.

I let my brushes wander freely on the canvas as the music washed over me. Some shapes evoke musical elements and instruments; they just happened. I worked on this for several days over a period of a few weeks, listening to Coldplay, Springsteen, Dave Brubeck, Dylan, James Blunt and a few others.

Iris – “Pop Music”
Digital 3.5” x 2.5”

The retro colors and the sense of fun reminded me of how a good pop song makes me feel. This is a limited edition of 25, giclee print on canvas. It was printed using an HP Designjet 5500ps and printed on Techniprint Glossy Canvas.

Ruth Jamieson – “Over The Rainbow”
Acrylic on Canvas 35” x 40.5”

Inspired by the song ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ as performed by ‘IL DIVO’ on their Christmas album. I have always loved this song, but it has always tugged on my heartstrings. It brought out in music the feelings of desolation and hopelessness I often had as a child. Feelings of being alone in a world, where ‘my’ dreams would never come true. Il Divo’s rendition of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ made this particularily clear to me and prompted me to do this painting. Over the Rainbow features many elements of the song, SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW. The dreary rooftops and chimney tops represent the weight of living in this mortal coil. The sombre sky and clouds seem to smother all chance of dreams coming true and foreshadow troubles. The rainbow features the ‘lullaby’ through which the singer heard of the land over the rainbow. The bluebirds flying up to and above the rainbow symbolize hope and freedom to achieve our dreams. Of course I added stars for wishing on. The steady, dreary rain falling below the rainbow symbolizes the tears of those living in melancholy and wishing to find some escape from it and to have their dreams of happiness come true. Many of those tears were mine in my younger years. I gave the dreams that I dare to dream, physical form and allowed them to escape through the chimneys and rise above the rainbow where they can come true in the land of blue skies, bluebirds, wishes on stars and hope. May all your dreams come true, ruth

Elizabeth Fiedel –  “Traveling Blues”
Oil on Canvas 16” x 20”

Since I first heard it way back in 1973, one of my all time favorite music albums is Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks 'Last Train to Hicksville, the Home of Happy Feet'. It's hard to pigeon-hole into a specific genre, combining elements of jazz, blues, country, Latin, and probably other things that I can't put my finger on!
Every tune on this album is a sing-along, toe-tapping experience for me! Because of this, my family prefers that I only listen to it when I'm alone in my car. ...Fortunately, I have lots of opportunities for solo travel!

David Hughes Brown – “Another Rainy Night”
Oil 16” x 20”

Well, since I'm mainly an abstract artist, this challenge is high priority. I see that there aren't many entries. My entry is based on one specific song by Queensryche - a band that many people consider a "hair band" or "90's has-beens". On the contrary, they have been a big influence on progressive metal with probably the most prolific frontman in rock, Geoff Tate. As I was creating this piece a few years ago, I delved into my CD collection & popped on this song "Another Rainy Night". It was a particularly rain-soaked weekend & all the factors converged to bring me into a mood that is expressed by the painting. Picture yourself staring out a pane of glass into the deluge. Enjoy!

These 2 lines sum up the painting:
"Strange how laughter looks like crying with no sound
Raindrops taste like tears without the pain."

Don't slam the door, on your way out
Don't leave without saying goodbye.
Another long distance night alone,
you leave me wanting, always leave me wanting more.
Last word today, coming home to stay?
Wouldn't that be nice, for a while?

But now my take-out food is growing cold,
and the candle's burned a hole in the floor.
And I'm still waiting for the ring of the phone.

I'm all alone
It's just another rainy night, without you.
Guess I'll leave a light on for you.
It's just another rainy night, without you.

Listen, there's a foghorn blowing
from the coast tonight
Remember making love in the rain?
Strange how laughter looks like crying with no sound
Raindrops taste like tears without the pain.
I'm not much without you, can't leave if I wanted to.
Maybe that's why you stay around

But tonight I'll sit here tending the fire
and pace the floor one hundred times in an hour.
And check the voice-mail for a message you've called.

I'm all alone
It's just another rainy night, without you.
Waiting by the phone. Alone.
It's just another rainy night, without you.
Guess I'll leave a light on for you.

I know I've said it before
hate the sound of the closing door
and your footsteps walking away.

But now my take-out food is growing cold,
and the candle's burned a hole in the floor.
And I'm still waiting for the ring of the phone.

I'm all alone
It's just another rainy night, without you.
Waiting by the phone. Alone.
And it's another rainy night, without you.
Guess I'll leave a light on for you.

It's just another rainy night, another rainy night,
another rainy night without you.

Heather Sims – “Sky Of Dreams”
Acrylic 16” x 20”

I started this one by listening to calmer music.. of which one of the songs 1973 by James Blunt!!..  (thanks Muriel.. that guy is now one of my favorites!! )
This abstract painting was created while listening to some of my favorite more relaxing songs. I felt more calm while creating this abstract. This abstract took many turns while painting it as songs and moods changed. I had a great time painting this! Thanks Lisa Thornton Whittaker for arranging this challenge!

Heather Sims – “Music Within”
Acrylic 16” x 20”

Here is one of my entries in the "Music in me" abstract challenge. I had no idea what I was going to paint but just chose my colors by my feeling of the music I listened to while painting. The music I listened to for this painting was upbeat and fun and I can see that spilling on to the canvas.

Lisa Miller – “The Heat Goes On”
Digital

I found this very hard to do. It's a digital piece done from a previous drawing.
The drummer pours his soul out under the red hot spotlight.

And though she is not eligible to be entered into the judging, Lisa's is well worth seeing.

Lisa Thornton Whittaker – “Secret Meeting”
Mixed Media on Canvas 20” x 20”

This painting is named "Secret Meeting" after The National song with the same name.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok5Xd-1hbeQ

Secret Meeting
I think this place is full of spies
I think they're onto me
Didn't anybody, didn't anybody tell you
Didn't anybody tell you how to gracefully disappear in a room
I know you put in the hours to keep me in sunglasses, I know

And so and now I'm sorry I missed you
I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain
It went the dull and wicked ordinary way
It went the dull and wicked ordinary way
And now I'm sorry I missed you
I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain

I think this place is full of spies
I think I'm ruined
Didn't anybody, didn't anybody tell you
Didn't anybody tell you, this river's full of lost sharks
I know you put in the hours to keep me in sunglasses, I know

And so and now I'm sorry I missed you
I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain
It went the dull and wicked ordinary way
It went the dull and wicked ordinary way

And now I'm sorry I missed you
I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain
And now I'm sorry I missed you
I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain
It went the dull and wicked ordinary way

This song, to me, is about sinking deep within your own mind and missing the world around you, the conversations and the bologna happening right next to you.  I could imagine, peeking out from this basement into all the commotion, just long enough to say "Um, no, yeah could you repeat that again," and sinking right back into the dark depths where I had come from.  In fact I have done that more than a few times.  Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd also gives me this idea, only in C.N. you don't really surface back up to acknowledge the world around you at all.  Secret Meeting is decidedly more lucid, but you get my point.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkJNyQfAprY

Only an eye surfaces onto a canvas of vibrating action.  Behind it all is the rest of the person in a still blackness.  The eye could recede behind the action into the black just as easy as it came up, gracefully disappearing in a room.

Aw, well, that's what I get from the song, anyway.  That's how I came up with the painting.
