This Week's Theme:   Still Life

A still life is art depicting a collection of objects. Sounds so straight forward, doesn't it. It isn't. The variety of items that can be found in a still life, the myriad of styles and media used to depicted a still life make for a theme that simply can not be adequately represented in seven works of art. To see a more of this week's theme, please take some time to explore the EBSQ Still Life Gallery.

Date of Work:  Nov, 2004

Still fascinated by light through glass, I was intrigued by the mix of color and texture seen on and in my own paint jars. The photograph was taken with a very wide lens (28mm) through a +3 diopter, allowing me to get in quite close. This proximity created the dramatic expansion of depth, and receding background, and threw the foremost jar a bit out of focus. The window behind them was frosted from mineral deposits diffusing the light somewhat, and the angle of the window gave the glass the green hue. I was particularly drawn to the large wooden handled brush, and the glowing, back-lit tips of the smaller brushes as well as of course, the reflection off of the red water. As I neared the bottom of the painting in mid-November, I was suddenly reminded of an important task, and then decided to include it as part of the piece.
