Yellowstone Lake is the largest freshwater lake in North America above 7000 feet and one of the largest such lakes in the world. At one time it drained into the Pacific Ocean from an outlet which fed into the Snake River but movements in the tilt of the lake bottom caused it to shift and feed into the Yellowstone River and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean. Boating and fishing are popular on the Lake and the two southern arms are reserved for non-motorized travel where wildlife is abundant and the quiet passage of a canoe affords a true wilderness experience.
