This is another of my paintings which began with the canvas folded into the origami bird base. The raw cotton canvas was scoured and dyed with Procion fiber reactive dyes. I began with the bird base because its structure corresponds with the structure of the bracts (what look like large white petals) of the flowers of the dogwoods native to the eastern U.S., Cornus florida. After application of the dye, the canvas was stretched and sealed with a clear acrylic primer before application of oil paint in glazes. In many areas I let the dye show through under the paint as the subject matter is not necessarily the flowers, but the structure of the bracts.
