Media:  antique wood table, glass, mirror,
Dimensions:  26 1/2" tall, 20" X 14"
Date of Work:  2003

This was a beautiful old table in need of refinishing that I found at a wonderful barn sale. It was the perfect candidate for a little shazzam!! (I don't think it knows what hit it !) The top of the table is a combination of both stained and leaded (with copper foil, ala Tiffany) glass (that's the mermaid), and mosiac with colored glass and lots of mirror. The mermaids' eye is a hand cut crystal from West Germany. The glasses used are primarily Bullseye catspaw - called that because the texture is reminiscent of a cats' paw prints. The colors of the water in between the pieces of mirror, and the mermaids' body and tail, are glorious blues and greens with some purples and pinks. There's a little bit of a handblown clear that has layers of green glass striations - much like water would have waving fronds of plant life. Glasses are primarily opalescent. Milky and rich with color, they're beautiful without being backlit as a window would be. The mosaic continues down to cover the bottom 2 shelves of the table, as well. Every single piece of the mosaic has been specifically and individually cut and positioned. (ie - this is NOT your basic "broken plate" mosaic.) The table itself is painted an aquamarine-turquoise, and embellished with magenta, lavender, turquoise, and a profusion of metalic gold. It has been signed, dated, and titled under the bottom shelf. The entire table is varnished, protecting the paint, and giving the mirrors a bubbled, other-worldly, underwater feel. Grout used in the mosaic is black. The table looks great in front of a window, the better to reflect light ! It LOVES hanging plants. It sparkles and shimmers as you move around. This is more sculpture than furniture. Private collection.
