This is another in a series of boxes I've been making - the horrendously cold weather has turned me inward , and these boxes are a reflection of that journey. Made to be deceptively simple on the outside, they each hold a unique surprise.
This box has a very plain black exterior. The lid is inlaid with a mosaic of handpainted and fired tiles in the pattern of a face. Inside, the mosaic continues with another tile (an alien creature?), 5 handcarved bone skulls from Tibet, and tiny mirrors. Grouted into place with plain black cement, the box is substantial and surprisingly heavy. It feels good in your hand and has enough interior room to hide a secret of your own.
Brass hardware and a protective coat of varnish finish the composition. Signed, dated, titled and numbered on the bottom. Private collection.
