This was a particularly important piece for me to complete--it was the only way that I could shake off the feelings that created it. It all started at the fair (sounds like the beginning lines of a good book!). I arrived with my husband and two children, eager to sample the barbeque (and ice cream, fudge, funnel cakes, caramel apples, cotton candy, grilled corn....) and assorted musical guests. We were slowly moving through the crowd when we were casually knocked aside by a skinhead family, all dressed in rebel flags and swastika tatoos. It shocked me--to the core--that something so full of hate and misery could come so close to my children. This piece is all about how they made me feel and how truly ugly they were--their words, their energy, their entire message.
