Media:Glazed stoneware clay sculpture Dimensions:19in x 29in Date of Work:2008
The story of Medusa is fascinating amongst all the tales of mythology. Imagine a creature with snakes all over its head! It was a creature I was compelled to represent in clay.
This sculpture was an exercise in determination. Clay shrinks as it dries. The snakes on this piece had to be added when the base structure was 'leather hard'. This can lead to differing shrinkage rates of the component parts, and stress cracking. It took three trys to get though the drying process without the piece pulling itself apart.
