I was born in San Diego on July 9th, 1975 and was raised in the beautiful rural community of Ramona, "The Valley of the Sun".

I am a "self taught" artist and I cannot remember a time I was not "creating" in one medium or another. I always "wanted" to ba an artist, though most of my life I spent pursuing more "stable" work. In 2000 I was introduced to Lapidary Arts and stone cutting and began working with beaded jewelry in 2002. This gave a form of art that I still am passionate about, yet I want to grow and try new mediums.

Recently I have realised that I need to create in one form or another, as artistic expression is like therapy to me. I never thought I could "live" as an artist without formal training, now I'm at a point where I can't live without being an artist.

I am currently experimenting with acrylic painting and digital mediums. Most of my work is abstract, as abstract art is what I have always been drawn to. When I go to a museum or gallery, I find myself staring at the abstract pieces just feeling the raw emotion flow from the pieces. That is what my painting is about, the raw emotion un-chained by conventional borders.

Lapidary and bead work will always be "in my blood", and I am sure the intense paterns you can find in stones will come out in my art no matter what medium I work in. They say that once you're a "rock hound always a rock hound" and I believe this is probably true.

You may notice some strange marks on the bottom right corner of my paintings, that is my initials in ancient runes. I have never liked my handwritten signiture, and have always been drawn towards the runic language, so it was only natural that runes became my "artist signiture".

I hope you enjoy looking through my portfolio.

"The meaning of Art" by Joseph Callahan, 2006

There is no such thing as bad art

Art is - there is no interpretation

To understand art you must look into yourself

and find the meaning

It is not what the artist intended

or rarly is

The meaning behind art is not for the artist to interpret

but the viewer

There is no meaning until you find it

You do not creat art to impart meaning

but simply to create art....

When you do that, you can never be anything but content....
