This pastel painting is a study the view from the window of Coombe Abbey near Coventry England. The abbey has been converted to a hotel where I have stayed several times. This piece is the final study for a much larger painting (acrylic 40" X 30"). The final piece (not this study) was juried into the TVAA Citation show in Dallas recently whilke still in an incompleted state.
I have long been attracted to windows as a primary theme in my art; first because of the stories implied and later, for the depth that is easily included when a window is present. When I began to study composition I realized that the rectilinear structure of a window also provided a visual foil to other more organic shapes in a piece as well as frequently providing definition for a light source.
