Looking out my mother's kitchen window, the sun was just beginning to set. The leaves had fallen, the trees were bare and stark black against the burning blaze of the sun. A light breeze picked up a few bits of the fallen foliage. I enjoyed combining the look of abstract and realist and the simplicity of the composition. I used gold foil for the sun to capture the effect of the blaze. I carved stamps for the spirals and used sponges for some elements in the background. Of course, the leaves were done with an old fashioned brush. I worked in a frame shop and the rubber pads, used for the back of a frame, come on sheets. When empty, the sheets serve as a wonderful stencil for all the dots in the foreground. It's painted on archival rag board and sealed with a clear acrylic varnish.
