Date of Work:  2006

Whenever I paint landscapes, and hopes are that it is to be more frequently, I often include beneath the earth, as that is what we are floating upon.

This painting is representational of the way the plates of the earth, float upon the mantle. The dark plate, the crust of the earth and underground as we know it, is floating upon the lighter colour in the foreground, the mantle.

Geologists have long speculated that, as plates, are pushed underground, they stay cooler even at ultrahigh pressures like those found 120 miles below the surface. The plates of the earth are from 50 to 250 miles thick.

To explain my term "blood of the earth": Oil and natural gas are found in the pore spaces surrounding grains comprising sedimentary rocks. That is my definition of the blood of the earth, including water as well.

The umber horizon, lit with red, floats upon it.

So there you have it. Horizon, underground and deeply underground, all in one tiny space.

Small paintings, square format; that is what I love. As I attempt to extend my horizons (no pun intended) and break the habits I have formed, these horizontal triptychs have begun.

Three 6" x 6" stretched canvases mounted on handfinished panel. Gold foil embellishments. SOLD.

Thank you for viewing my work.
