Arbor Suite - Sixth in a series.
Trees stand, often spanning several human generations, as silent witnesses to events great and small. Trees are a theme I come back to paint again and again because there are endless ways to depict them. These are trees against a pre-dawn, moonlit sky.
With this sixth piece in the series, I am becoming much more concerned with how the trees relate to the whole canvas. Here, the shadows extend the trees so they touch all the edges of the canvas. In this piece the color is understated but impactful due to the unusual transitions. The lines and edges in this painting are not absolute, there is a softness about everything resulting in an almost surreal atmosphere.
