Detail Image

W. Kevin Murray's 'Splintered Sunlight Through Reeds'

Media:  oil on canvas
Dimensions:  16' x 20'
Date of Work:  June 2007

This is my RIP of W. Kevin Murray's photo titled "Splintered Sunlight Through Reeds". I found many of Kevin's photographs inspiring, and I jumped at the chance to interpret one.

I chose this piece because the strong contrasts of light and shadow, and diagonal and vertical lines were simply too good to pass up. Who would have expected so much rhythm and movement in a marsh? It reminded me of music on a page.

My simplified version plays up the abstract quality of Kevin's photo. I loved painting the long colorful strokes for the verticals and the staccato strokes for the slanting diagonals.

You can see Kevin's work in the detail here, but this small image doesn't do it justice. Check the pieces in his portfolio.
