I loved the idea of doing a piece for this show. With a background that includes Interior Decorating, Facilities Management and Contract Furnishings, one of my immediate cerebral responses to a mention of the 50's is mid-century Modern design. To me, the undisputable King and Queen of this movement were Ray & Charles Eames (NO! They are not brothers! They were a married hetero couple). Ray Eames was so far ahead of her time, on so many levels. One of the many things that she did was design some fabulous fabrics. She is like a Goddess to me! When I was playing around with concepts for this show, and deciding on an approach, I browsed through an Eames retrospective, and spotted one of the fabrics. I went from there, browsing through so many designs that were bleeding edge at the time. Then it dawned on me that many of the doodads that I had laid out on my desk were reminiscent of elements in those fabrics. So was born my ode to Ray Eames and her fabulous fabrics! I decided to create the base in the quintessential aqua that was so ubiquitous in the 1950's. The dimensional elements were pulled from my stacks and stacks because their form illustrates the 50's and ingredients in Eames' fabrics. Some of the symbols in my piece are created in glittery gold dimensional paint - not a typical choice for me, but, oh, so fitting here! My detail photos show some samples of fabric inspirations. The sides on the staple free wrapped canvas sides are painted black, and this fun piece is all set to hang in any retro kitsch space you have! I hope that you have as much fun viewing it as I had creating it!
