London Brick (Detail)

Media:  Watercolour and gel pen
Dimensions:  12" x 9"
Date of Work:  2005

I love bricks. I drew the buildings with a black gel pen, from mental observations, and from my imagination, and begun the painting of them by using a red water colour mix that I had already been using for another painting; I liked the effect so much, I decided to continue to mix shades of red yellow orange and purple to colour these old buildings which reminded me of shabbily picturesque areas of South London. As you can see, the tall ex-factory building on the right and another house at the top left have had make-overs, such contrasts are found in once run down, but now up and coming districts. The exposed bricks are the different shades that they can be, though the overriding colour of London brick is a dirty yellow, and of course there is good old rendering. The desired effect of the painting is to make you feel this area has a hopeful and friendly glow despite its overcrowding Allow your eyes to explore the ups downs ins and outs of it.

This original drawing has been created using watercolour paints and gel pens on watercolour paper.

The drawing is NOT mounted or framed.

It is signed by the artist
