The French Republican Calendar was instituted in 1793, after the Revolution of 1789. It was composed of 10 30-day months, plus holidays honoring Labor, Virtue, Genius, Opinion and so on. Each month was divided in 3 "decades". The names of the saints assigned to each day in the Gregorian calendar were replaced by names of fruit, vegetables and animals. The months were renamed to reflect the season and weather.

I chose to represent Messidor, a summer month that comprised part of June and July. Its allegorical image is a woman sleeping in the warm sun. The central figure is the Revolution, wearing the "bonnet phrygien" that characterized revolutionaries.

This was executed in Photoshop CS on a Mac G4. I scanned chinese papers and obtained other images from some clip art I own, and some from Wiki Commons.
