This is a piece dedicated to the notion of rethinking the Freudian term, "penis envy". Feminists originally rejected psychoanalysis because of the concept ; Freud on the other hand understood feminism as a manifestation of this very thing. If nothing else, this made the connection between envy and feminism loaded, to say the least. Back in the early 70's, feminism was in militant opposition to, or denial of, women's envy of a) men and b) other women.
Since 1972, this entire configuration has changed. A number of feminist scholars in the late 70s and the 80s turned to Freud, finding value there, despite the infamous "penis envy." Currently, feminist interest in psychoanalysis has lessened, but what there is has broadened beyond Freud.
