Stacy Alexander, Mixed Media Artist

Self Portrait - Stacy Alexander

Frida y la Galleta Azul

Alexander's work encompasses the use of many different types of media and addresses friendships among women, current events and emerging society aided by the fields of politics, psychology, religion, music, sexual politics, myth, emotion, compassion, humor and how these things enable art to weave meaningful images out of the individual strands of knowledge from other, more restrictively focused disciplines.

The artist states:

One of my undergraduate degrees is in creative wrting, so I often allow the written word to come into play in my work. I use the narrative to bridge the gap of understanding of the concepts that I like to convey with my art.

A recycling enthusiast, I like to I find ways to re-purpose discards that might otherwise end up in our land fills and dumps. This challenge fits perfectly with my penchant for experimenting with different media and trying new techniques. Mosaic is a perfect vehicle for recycling. I am new to the medium and still have a lot to learn about mosaic, but I gain something with each new piece that I create.

I shoot and edit digital videos and am a digital photography enthusiast. I paint, write performance art and do some sculptural work. I like to cast different resins and materials to create 3D work. I create spiritual and meditation boxes, alters, shrines and other work all based on the fundamental concept of the connectedness of humans to our environment and to one another. This is a reoccurring theme in my work.

Artistic influences? I share a birthday with Georgia O'Keefe and am obsessed with Frida Kahlo. Some artists whose work I admire include : Eva Hess, Delaine Hackney (a close friend who makes beautiful mosaics), Ana Voog (another close friend and performance/visual/music artist) , Gilda Snowden, Arlene Elizabeth (yet another friend who makes incredible mosaics from origami) , Bruce Nauman, Rory Kennedy (film), Bettye, Lezley and Alison Saar, Cindy Sherman, Diane Arbus, Kiki Smith, Sandra Blow, Joan Mitchell, Niki de St. Phalle, Yoko Ono, Judy Chicago, Judy Onofrio, Barbara Kruger, Sarah Johnson, Myles Blackwood. Stacy Zimmerman, Karma Hallmark. Laurie Anderson, Yuriko Yamaguchi, Sally Mann, Pipilotti Rist, Andy Warhol, Robert Roschenberg, Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollack, Andy Goldsworthy, Mark Rothko and Richard Tuttle. ...and many others.

Ms. Alexander received her art training at the Alfred C. Glassell, Jr., Museum School, The University of Houston, through private lessons and through various workshops.
