Media:  oil on linen
Dimensions:  36"x36"
Date of Work:  Dec 2004

$2795.00 Original oil on linen. Unframed. This montage is a study piece of the life of the herd stallion. My intent is to show the various personalities of the herd patriarch; the jealous and tyrannical leader, the warrior battling for his right to possess, defender who positions himself between the herd and danger to allow even the smallest foal to escape, and, In defending his herd, the stallion gallops towards the intruder while his mares and foals run the other way to escape danger. The stallion shakes his head with his ears pinned back in a threat display of aggression. He may rear and paw the earth before turning to race after his herd, or, he may even charge and attempt to bite and pound the intruder with his hooves! Another face of the herd stallion; the proud suitor strutting and displaying his charms, and the attentive mate bonding with and caring for each of his family of mares and foals. Note the details on these two fighting stallions. As mature herd stallions, they show the scars, literally of thier past battles to attain and keep thier position as herd leader. In addition to being a character study, this montage is painted as a color study. A split complementary theme is used to unify the painting by helping to tie the various elements together with color. Only orange, blue-violet, blue-green, black, and, white are used. Painted in oils on stretched medium weight linen. When I paint a montage like this one, I generally work out my composition as I go, while sketching the figures onto the canvas using thinned oil paint. I worked out a couple small thumbnail sketches on this painting beforehand, but, ultimately reworked a unique composition on the canvas as I lay in the figures.
