Media:  Painted Furniture (Dresser), Acrylics
Dimensions:  4' x 18"
Date of Work:  2002

Years ago, shortly after my husband and I purchased our first home, we crept out in the dark of night to surreptitiously retrieve a shabby old dresser from a neighboring curbside, with the intention of satisfying our newly acquired need for additional furniture. I had promised my skeptical spouse that I could make something useful and worthwhile from this rather dubious find....

The result was a fun, nifty dresser for my young son's new bedroom, painted on all sides with lively colorful scenes. The overall theme was Soccer, as per my son's special request -- however, he had also asked for me to somehow incorporate Bats, since we were researching them as part of a home education science fair project at the time. As a result of our studies, we had all become very enamored of this fascinating little mammal ...

Hence, we have here an entire dresser side panel depicting a heated night-time soccer match, played by highly competitive **FRUIT BATS (fancifully caricatured, as owning to the youthful nature of the project) under the light of a friendly, watchful moon. (The opposite side of the dresser features a similar scene, but with human children playing under an amused Sun, in daylight)....

**Fruit Bats, unlike other species, use eyesight and smell, rather than echolocation, to find food. All the better for soccer playing, eh...?

(To note: Naturally this project was all REALLY cool when my son was 7 years old. But now that he's 15? Well, not so much...)
