One probably wouldn't think that you can glean much insight from a painting of fruit, but I think that simple objects can elicit just as much response as, for example, a painting of the human figure. I didn't want to produce a bright, happy sunny painting; that's really not my style. Instead, I really believe that this is a sort of serious, rustic, "of the earth" portrait of a few simple, beautiful objects. They are arranged in a rather contemporary style; from the way the painting is meant to be hung they look like they are stacked on top of other, lying in an oblong dish accented in gold and copper. Although they do have a lusciousness about them, the bright yellows of their peel are mellowed by greenish umbers and a hint of black. There's something almost meditative about them.
