Love and passion are the themes of this piece. But what kind of love? Is this a clandestine, forbidden love? Are they comforting one another? Are they saying a final farewell? I love that this piece has so much to say, yet still remains ambiguous. The figures in this piece have a realistic, yet simplistic, slightly surreal structure, and are painted in cool shades of olive green, creamy, pale yellow, and white. The rest of the colors are simple, a rich-a cool blue and smoky plum in the background, anchored by an earthy green at the bottom third of the piece. To complement the coolness of the tones in the figures, a column of fiery red. This painting is almost three years old, and it has taken me that long to be able to let it go. As a painter, there are some paintings that are just so special to you, that you feel you need to keep them to yourself-surround yourself with them-until you reach a point where you can let them go. This is one of those paintings. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
