Media:  watercolour on unryu rice paper
Dimensions:  approx. 16 x 20
Date of Work:  mid '04

This painting was painted on a piece of Unryu rice paper. Painting on Unryu is kind of like painting on a piece of wet kleenex! Very, very tricky!!

First, the paper was scrunched up tightly, then smoothed out in front of me on the painting table, while I contemplated the images that it conveyed to me. (You have to listen while the paper 'talks' to you.) Then sumi ink was brushed on, holding the brush at a sideways angle to the paper and using the side of a round brush. After that, the colour was added using Winsor Newton paints. When very dry, it was mounted onto a piece of arches 140 lb hot pressed watercolour paper for support using the same recipe for glue that has been used for centuries in China.

In the fall, near Plaisance, Quebec, the colours are indescribably beautiful! This area is filled with Birch trees also. Some of my favourite trees, in my favourite get-away place, filled with my favourite colours, against my favourite cobalt blue sky. What more could I ask for? :o)

Accepted into the CRAG Annual Juried Art Show.
