My
work is always an experiment. As of the last 15 years I have been combining
various media (watercolor, gouache, colored pencil, oil bar, pastels and of all
things sharpie pen magic markers -paint pens and metallic pens!) to create
colorful detailed drawings/paintings. For the most part, I work with
watercolor and colored pencil since they dry quickly and create sensuous
textures and brilliant colors. The themes in my pieces revolve around the
Mexican Day of The Dead. I was very inspired and intrigued by the folk art that
I saw when I studied in Mexico a few years ago. I really find the laughing
lively skeletons more fun than humans! These characters are constantly in my
pieces even if I sneak them in the shadows!
As
of late my work has been figurative. For a short while I was doing work from memory of women and men dancing in a variety of "gothic" attire. I found all of the emotions and
color and texture and motion of crowds very fascinating and strive to capture
the chaos of a moment onto paper.
During the last 3 years I have focused on nature, in particular, flowers. The shape of irises, folds of rose petals, and colors of the lily pond have been a source of inspiration.
