Date of Work:  July 2006

Large multi-tonal abstract.

Tribal in nature, I have always been fascinated with primitive body art.

This painting depicts members of an ancient Native American tribe donning war-painted faces, preparing for battle.

This form of self-adornment served not only as tribal identification, but as a way to appear more fierce to the enemy they were battling.

War paint and body decoration can be a warrior's most potent psychological weapon especially if he sports an adornment which may have been acquired through pain. This type of body decoration may also have been a weapon against spirits and demons, and a higher psychological edge over their enemies.

This painting was created using acrylics and the War paint was using texture paint, to give a raised appearance and sense dimension to carved or tatooed images on the warrior's faces.
