I see the yellow flower as being symbolic of hope, rising up above the water.

There's a lot of emotion and rough brush strokes in this painting. You can look into and through the water. I've been fascinated with swamps since I was a child and tried to portray the murkiness of the water and the shadows and light in an impressionistic manner.

I use multiple glazes and layers of paint to achieve this effect.
